For the last year or two, I have checked the old alt-atheism.org web address.
It was, for the longest time, owned by some web parking sharks who wanted $500
to buy it.

This morning, when I checked it, it was free.

I have purchased alt-atheism.org for 5 years, for $75 (including a round-up
donation to the Arizona Humane Society; gotta help the kitties).

So. What do we do with it?

I'd be more than willing to fund a vhost somewhere, and we could install a
Wiki, or similar on it. Repost Michelle's alt.atheism FAQ, and take it from
there.

Anyone interested?

Congrats on being the new owner of a very nice web address.

I just entered the name in by browser and GoDaddy.com appeared on my
screen telling me that:

Welcome to alt-atheism.org
This Web page is parked FREE, courtesy of GoDaddy.com

I have no idea what that means. I surf the web but I don't know much
about how it actually works.

Well, my understanding was we used to own this years ago. As with all things,
time was run out of, and IIRC, a renewal was missed, and the domain was lost.

hypatiab7 used to have an excellent FAQ and the charter for a.a there:

http://web.archive.org/web/20050227001657/alt-atheism.org/article_view.php?c=&id=1

I don't consider that I "own" it; really, it should be owned by ALL a.a
regulars. I guess what I'd like to see is if we have some interested people
who'd be willing to put in some minor work on it, I'd be willing to get a host
setup with a wiki of some sort (maybe mediawiki, the same that runs wikipedia,
or others) and we could transfer over some of the material. Interested parties
could have write/admin access, and we could resurrect the old site in an
easier-to-maintain format.

Some ideas for hosting material:

1) Posting the a.a FAQ and charter
2) Common arguments seen in a.a and their refutations.
3) User pages for common posters (if they desire)
4) Ressurected "post of the month".
5) ???
6) PROFIT!

The cost of the domain was dirt cheap for 5 years, so we have lots of time to
discuss what we'd want to see. Since I already moderate, and am a Sysadmin in
RL, another host to manage isn't a big deal. I haven't got the time to become
the sole (soul? HAHA) content creator, but if we could get a few regulars to
commit a 1/2 hour a month to doing editing/maintenance of pages, etc. we might
make a go of having a nice site for our beloved a.a

Discuss.

I still have custody of the "Deconversion List" - those who became
atheists through participating online, principally on aa. Would love
to add it to the website. We should also have a go at bringing back
the Twit List and Kook List.

How do you feel about a wiki format?

Works for me. It certainly makes creation and editing much easier!

I'd be willing to chip in with hosting if you like, but I'm not creative
enough for content generation, can set up a Drupal or something for you
though if you want to maintain it

Thats good news!
Mark Bilbo used to have alt atheism related material on a web site
I should alert him that you have this he may have some material for
you.
(I still have email and Facebook contact with him.)
He has (likeme!) mostly given up on the newsgroup - but he may want to
help out.

Mark.
