To all my fellow video game collectors,

I know most of you may have seen this post before, but I will repost it
from time to time
for those of you who haven't.

I have gone through the time and effort to compile this long collection of
info on this jerk. If you are thinking of dealing with the guy, then just
read
the following and I think you will change your mind.

Personally, I think he needs a major ass kicking, but I'll let you
decide...

***********************************************************

I first encountered him when I was trying to buy some games from the creep.
It started out simple enough.....

****

On Wed, 24 Sep 1997 06:02:24 -0400, I wrote:

if still available, I would like the following:

both Swordquests @ 6.00
River raid box only @ 2.00
Outlaw @ 3.00

Do all of these have the instructions?

Please let me know if this order can be fulfilled and what the total would
be. Shipping would be to SC Thanks.

****

Then he responded.........

They all have their instructions. The total with shipping would be $20.
If interested please confirm your order and send payment to:

Brian Workman
1318 Wolfe St.
Jacksonville, FL 32205
(904)388-7143

Thanks!

***********

So then on Wed, 24 Sep 1997 19:08:56 -0400, I wrote:

Brian,

The total on the games was only $11.00, and I was hoping to get a break on
the lot since I wanted to buy three (like maybe $12.00 shipped). Where do
you get $20.00? Are you charging 9.00 for shipping from FL to SC?

*********

And he responded with........

Well, your typed message says "both Swordquests @ 6.00" and without
checking my list I assumed it was $6.00 each. My error. However, since I
don't like
being called an idiot, I don't think I will deal with you now. Also, $12 is
not
enough for ANYONE to give you a "break". Thanks for the abuse.

Brian

*******

This is what tipped me off that the guy was strange.
So then I responded with.......

Geeze, you must have some major chip on your shoulder to think that I was
calling you an idiot. I simply wanted to know where the difference was. If
I was charging you that $9.00 for shipping you would ask too. I can't
believe your horribly low level of professionalism, and it immature jerks
like yourself that make trading over the net a risky business. Talk about
over defensive! If you treat everyone who want to deal with you in this
way, no one will want to.

Besides, you don't even know your own list well enough to know what I meant
by both carts for 6?

And don't worry, I don't think I would want to deal with you, either.

************

Then the little bastard wrote this back........

Hey, this isn't Walmart. It isn't a profession either. I've been trading on
the
net for years and haven't had any problems, but every once in a while I
make a
mistake. What I don't expect is a terse response to a small error, which is
exactly what you did, regardless of how you want to believe you responded.
I have made hundreds of transactions with hundreds of netters and I am
neither
risky nor unfair so you can judge your "risk" in whatever way you feel
necessary
for yourself.

>Besides you don't even know your own list well enough to know what I meant
>by both carts for 6?

Your exact quote on those Swordquest carts Was "both carts @ $6.00" and by
definition "@" means "at" or "each". An easy mistake to make. You worded it
vaguely, I didn't.

>And don't worry, I don't think I would want to deal with you, either.

Oh, touche.

Please, don't write back.

***********************

So I posted the whole exchange to show everyone what an unstable jerk he
was.
But the story doesn't end there. After my original post - I got this letter
from someone else (James....@m.cc.utah.edu)
who has heard of this little weasel. It reads as follows....

A few months ago, I had problems with Brian Workman. He bid in three of
my auctions and was very late with two payments and never sent his third.
He owes me around $150 for the stuff he won. His only excuse was that "he
sent it but the mail must be slow because all of the recent floods". He
lives in Florida and there had been no flooding earlier this year.

Anyways, I checked around and came up with several people who had bad
dealings with him. I hem about him and then I made a post which included
comments from all of the poeple he had dealt with. It was pretty
effective, but unfortunately everyone did not see it. Most people found
it very informative and he did disappear
from the newsgroup for a short time, but now he is back and causing
trouble again. Here is the original post I made...

Brian Workman (bwor...@southeast.net) wrote:
:
: (references available on request)
:
There is no need to request references from Brian, I will provide several
for you. I have been dealing with Brian since January of this year. In
January, he bought several items from me. He sent me payment four weeks
later. He was slow, but nothing to worry about. In February, Brian
bought some more stuff from me. He sent payment six weeks later. Slower
this time, but still within tolerable limits. However, after two weeks
of waiting, I sent him a reminder (the same reminder I send whenever I
have not received payment from someone after two weeks). I merely stated
that I had not received his payment yet. He said he could not get to his
bank or the post office during business hours. I replied by stating that
he could obtain a money order at Grocery Stores, 7-11s and Circle Ks. I
also told him that I would accept a personal check if a money order was a
problem. His reply was "don't try to bully me...you better be nicer to
me if you want your money". I just let it go and eventually his payment
showed up.

In March, Brian purchased $162 worth of stuff from me. I waited two
weeks and then sent him a reminder. He said that payment was already on
the way. I packaged his stuff up and waited two more weeks, but his
payment did not arrive. I sent him email stating that I had not received
his payment yet (by this time, I was begining to think something was
wrong because more than one person had complained about him). He became
rude and stated "the payment was sent, but it is probably being delayed
due to the recent flooding". Since he lives nowhere near a flood and I
had received payments from all over the world, I didn't buy his excuse
for a minute.

It is now May and I have not received payment and Brian does not return
my email. He has never even contacted me to see if I got the money order
that he supposedly sent. This leads me to believe that he never even
sent it because most people would be concerned if their $162 was lost in
the mail. During my three years of buying, selling and trading on the
internet, I have never dealt with a more difficult person.

So, I checked around with a few people who have dealt with Brian in the
past and here is what they had to say:

Neil Gordon (pep...@freenet.edmonton.ab.ca) is still waiting to receive
pament for the items Brian won in his April auction. He also stated that
Brian has always been late with payments in the past.

Ken McCord (chip...@bellatlantic.net) had also been waiting quite awhile
for payment from Brian.

Brian Hammack (brian....@rook.wa.com) had completely given up hope of
ever receiving the money Brian owed him from his January Auction.

Barry Mozes (bear...@whidbey.com) had tried to do a trade with Brian
which turned sour. His main complaint was that Brian appears to be very
proper on newsgroups, but is very rude via email. He also stated that
Brian likes to post others' email out of context to make a point. Barry
is willing to provide a more indepth reference if you email him.

Andrew Fandre (afa...@iquest.com) was involved in a trade with Brian.
Andrew sent his stuff to Brian and Brian confirmed that he received the
item. Andrew never received the stuff that Brian claimed to have sent.
It took alot of posting to newsgroups before Andrew was able to get his
items back. He states that Brian sent him email with pornography
attached as a form of harassment. He also states that Brian is "juvenile
and malicious". He does not believe that Brian ever sent his side of the
trade. He is also willing to discuss Brian further.

So, if you do decide to deal with Brian, make sure you contact the people
listed above first. He may sometimes complete a deal, but the above
people will tell you about his bad dealings.

*************************

Then Brian got the bright idea that since he was having a sale at the time,

he who try and do same damage control and posted our whole exchange as
well,
except with the preface of:

Oh boy, not again.

Every once in a while they crawl out of the woodwork and try to prove to
everyone that they can be a public nuisance. Andrew Britt has decided that
he'll
throw netiquette out the window and rudely post a private email exchange on
the
newsgroups in an attempt to "destroy" me for deciding not to do business
with
him. This will be my only public posting concerning Andrew and his amusing
antics. Following is the entire exchange for your amusement:

(then with the above exchange, except of course the coward deleted his
address and
phone number)

After which, since the moron couldn't even get my name right, he posted
this:

Boy, that's embarassing. The knothead's name is William Britt,
not Andrew Britt. :)

The funny thing is, after these posts I have seen messages and received
email like the follwing:

DONT FEAR ( WQQ...@prodigy.com ) wrote:

Here are my two stories involving the infamous man. On my first
auction he bid on and actually sent his payment to me. That's where
the good part ends. You see he sent me a personal check, which
wasn't one of the preferred methods of payment, and as my rules
stated there was a 2-3 week waiting period if you sent a check.
After one week he was asking me, rather rudly, where his stuff was
and I told him about my waiting period. A few days after that I got
another email from him asking the same question, this one was
supported with a public post from BWorkman. This was quite troubling
to me. Here I was trying to establish a good name for myself and he
was questioning my character publically for no reason. My second run-
in with Brian was on my second auction. On this auction, I guess he
decided to "stick it to me". He bid on $48 worth of stuff and never
sent me dime. I emailed him invoices twice. After the second won he
assured me that he intended on sending the money. Well I'm sure you
guess what that meant. Yup, no money. So I have adopted what I call
a Bworkman clause for my future auctions. That is if you don't tell
me that you don't plan to send money for items won in a auction.
Don't bother bidding because your bids won't be recorded. Thus my
beginning and end of Bworkman.

All this talk about Brian has got my wheels
turning and I actually remembered something:
This guy has on several occasions put an
"order" in to buy various things from me,
which he never followed through on. I would
E-mail weeks after having received no payment
from him and he would respond about 10% of the
time with some lie about the mail getting lost.
After the third or fourth time of him "stroking"
me, I decided never to reply to his E-mails
again. There are enough idiots out there, and
the list is getting bigger by the day. I am
working on a Bad Traders list for my web page
and now that I think about it, people who do
not send thier payment after they promised they
would(and don't let you know that they never
intended to) are just as much a bad trader
as someone who actually rips you off.
It not only wastes your time, but you can also
loose out on other opportunities as well.

Bottom line:

Brian Workman is definately a flake. It would
be good advice to stay away from anyone who
has been diagnosed as such, now wouldn't it?

BTW: I am finding that even the more "popular"
and "serious" collectors are getting more and
more flaky every day. Is there some sort of
degenerative disease associated with classic
collecting that I should know about? Or have
they, and soon to become me, always been like
this?

That does it, I am definately going to put up
a "flaky" page on my site. It should be pretty
humorous as you all will find out ;)

Yes, we all have seen this, and frankly, it's getting annoying. I know fora
fact that you are not the only one who has had problems trying to
buy something off the internet. I had a problem with someone selling
games in here a few months ago (also a difference of opinions about
quoted prices). However, we kept it somewhat civil, and despite
threats of postings in the various newsgroups, we agreed to
disagree and this person sent me back my money, even after
they had cashed my check.

Just because I have a problem with this person does not mean that
others should avoid them. And just because you had a problem
with Brian does not mean that I, or anyone else, will. I have
ordered a few games from Brian just this week and I expect
there to be no problems.

No, please don't. The two of you have said what you want to say.
This bickering is pointless and does not do either party any good.
What's done is done, and needs to be left in the past.

I don't know why everyone is complaining about Brian Workman, and his
alleged tendency to be late or avoid payment.

It is my understanding that he always sends payment very quickly when
ordering child pornography over the net.

Some always have been. I had one "reputable" and "serious" collector (who
shall remain nameless - you know who you are) back out of an auction in a
particularly weaselly way: he was the high bidder on a somewhat rare cart
in one of my auctions. A few weeks after the auction, I get an email from
this guy saying that he's really having a hard time financially, and can I
knock a few bucks off?

Needless to say, I'm none too thrilled about this slimy tactic (if you
can't pay, don't bid!), but what the hell - I don't want to have to dig
through the results and try selling it again to the next highest bidder;
all of the other stuff had gone out already anyway. So I reluctanctly say
OK...

Another week goes by with no response, and then, unbelievably, I get
mail from him. Not a "thanks", or a note saying that the money's on the
way. No! The asshole was telling me never mind, that he'd found the cart
at a thrift shop and didn't want mine!

This guy was awarded a prominent place on my "do not accept bids" list...

Hey, I knew a guy named Mark Workman. He stole about 20 disks from me back

Arlington, TX.
