Much to the dismay of astrological
empiricists, asteroids usually derive
their purported significance from the
mythological associations of their
names. Metis was one of the Titans,
aunt to Zeus (Jupiter) and his
siblings. Robert Graves associates her
with the planet (not the god) Mercury.
Her name means "counsel"; she gave
advice to Zeus when he plotted to
overthrown his father Cronos (Saturn).
Later Zeus pursued her, and despite her
shape-changing attempts at escape,
impregnated her. When an oracle
prophecized that her son would be
greater than his father, Zeus tricked
her into turning into a fly and
swallowed her. Later her daughter by
Zeus, Athena, was born from Zeus' head.
Zeus claimed that he continued to
receive inner counsel from Metis.
The main theme here is advice, as her
name suggests. There would seem to be
an association with innate, practical
wisdom, rather than with intellectual
knowledge. From a feminist perspective
(which is often associated with
asteroidology) it's a myth about
suppression and appropriation of female
knowledge. I would look in particular
to aspects with Jupiter, Pallas (Athena)
and perhaps Mercury.
