Roy Chiao Died by Heart Disease in the States

"Combo Best Actor" Roy Chiao died at 16:00 HKT 16 April 1999 in Seattle, US by
heart diseased at an age of 72.

Roy Chiao has been partcipated in show business for 49 years. His last
participation is a church movie with literature name "City of Angels", the first
pure creative religious movie in Hong Kong, which is still in production. In
March 1999, Roy and his wife Siu Kam-chi came back to Hong Kong for the
production of "City of Angels" while the filming ended 2 days ago.

The death of Roy Chiao is announced vide news release from the production
company of "City of Angels". Mr. YUEN Man-fai, the person in-charge of the
company, said that Roy phoned him a day before Roy's death asking about the
progress of the production of "City of Angels" as well as arranging the date for
Roy to come back to Hong Kong for the gala premiere of the movie.


Promised to Finish the Remaining Goal

YUEN also said that Siu Kam-chi, the wife of Roy Chiao, informed them the death
of Roy Chiao yesterday while YUEN promised Siu for speeding up the whole
production process to finish the last goal of Roy Chiao.

YUEN quoted a saying from Roy during production "God! I know you are with us at
any time and I also know that our lifes are in your hands. If you would like to
get back our lifes, you have the full freedom.


Brief Biolography of Roy Chiao

Roy Chiao was born in Shanghai in 1927. His dad had participated the revolution
with SUEN Yat-sin while his dad is in Britian.

Roy has genious potential in languages, he is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese,
Shanghaiese, Xiaochauese, Japanese and Ehglish.

Roy Chiao first participated in show business in 1949 in LI Ying's direction "Ah
Li Shan" as temporary actor. Then he joined US army as translator and went to
the warfield of Korea. He came to Japan after the end of Korean War and met Pai
Kwong in Tokyo.

In 1955, Pai Kwong came back to film industry by estalishing Kwok Kwong Film
Company and produced movies in Hong Kong. He subsequently invited Roy and other
actors to join the production of "Fresh Peony" (1956) [Directed by Pai Kwong,
Law Chun, featuring Pai Kwong, Law Wai, Yeung Chi-hing and Roy Chiao]. Roy
started his show business as actor with nickname "Rapid Actor".

Roy decided to be a Christian at his age of 22 and he married with famous disk
jocky Siu Kam Chi (LAU Yin-pint) at age 31. They had a very good life after
arriage and with a son and two daughters.

Roy Chiao has been acted in a large variety for his 44 years in film industry,
from good-looking actor to woody elderly. He was also cast in Steven Spiberg's
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" (1984).

In 1994, Roy and his wife emigrated to Seattle.

In 1996, Roy Chiao tried to invest his money in filming religious movie "Life is
legend because of you, the life of Roy Chiao" about his tons of accidents in
early ages, including car accidents, boat crashes and heart diseases with his
experience to fight again death.

In addition to his success in film industry, Roy Chiao also participated the TV
dramas in TVB, ATV and RTHK in 70s/80s.

In 90s, Roy Chiao seldom participated in movies. He featured in "A Kid From
Tibet" (1992), "Treasure Hunt" (1994), "Summer Snow" (1995), "The Age of
Miracles" (1996) and "All's Well, End's Well 97" (1997).

Reaction from Insiders

Mr. Stephen CHOW, who worked with Roy Chiao in "All's Well, End's Well 97" and
shared the Best Actor Award with Roy in the first Golden Bauhinia Awards in
1996, was shocked when knowing the death of Roy Chiao. He even asked reporters
if the news is true. "He is a good actor, I considered him as my senior",
Stephen said.

Jacob CHEUNG Chi-leung, has been knowing Roy Chiao for a long time and also cast
Roy in his direction "The Cageman" (1992), considered Roy as a guy with fun and
love. However, they have contacted for years. "Though I feel sorry about the
news, I consider death won't be too sad for him as he has his own religious. Of
course, I don't want him leave us so early because I want to cast him in my
direction 'Chinese Railway'.

This is sad news. I've always liked Chiao, from the movies he did
with King Hu to the present. Just last week, I happened to pick up
the Special Edition LD of ENTER THE DRAGON. Some here might remember
my question concerning Keye Luke's dubbing for Shih Kien -- I got
the SE LD to see what other gems of information might be found in
the commentary. One of them concerned Roy Chiao (who appeared in
the film, uncredited, as Bruce's sifu). He was apparently a fairly
skilled pilot, and in fact, piloted the plane for the aerial shots
of Han's island.
