Has anyone seen this movie? It was playing in NYC, along with The Isle and
some others, but I was unable to go. I'm pretty sure most shows sold out, so
I'm guessing that it's popular.
I was searching around for it on DVD and found that yesasia.com has it region
free. And for only $9.99!!
I'm hoping that Memento Mori is atmospheric and creepy. Could someone tell me
if this is more of a horror movie or drama? Anyone have a review that doesn't
give away too much?

I haven't seen MM yet but the HK DVD is full-frame only. If you can play it,
the R3 Spectrum disk is also now out at both yesasia and dvdasian.com
It's widescreen, 16:9 enhanced, with trailer, OST, cast/crew,interactive menu
and chapter selection.

I just got the region 3 widescreen disc from pokerindustries.com. If you can't play R3, then the region free HK
disc is worth the nine bucks even though it's full frame. The VCD is also good looking, though when I saw it,
it was the same price as the DVD (widescreen, though).

I've watched about half of the film so far, and it's pretty weird. Very slow moving at first, but if you are a
fan of any of the suspense films that have been coming out of Japan recently, it has a very similar feel.

Just saw this one the other day and I have to say it is quite a nice
film. Unfortunately the Mei Ah dvd doesn't do it any justice at all,
it's full frame suffers from heavy artifacting and some of the subs
move at a distractingly fast pace. Still for the cheap price and if
you're not sure if you'll enjoy it I'd recommend checking it out. The
soundtrack is in 2 channel stereo and is acceptable. Does anyone know
if a soundtrack cd exists? The score is excellent and very moving.

It is very atmospheric and a bit creepy.

More of a surreal horror movie. It has some drama and a love story,
but for me it works better on the level of the opressive atmosphere
it's able to create, confusing our senses with visuals but also with a
narrative that includes flashbacks that don't say they are flashbacks.

I like cheap DVDs but not at every cost. Er, well, you get the point.
If I have the option between a not-cheap DVD with good transfer and
original ratio enhanced for 16:9 TVs I'll pass the cheap option,
especially if the image is cropped or reformated.

Some Korean editions had some problem with widescreen presentation
forcing you to change the TV and/or the player settings, I think... Is
this DVD OK in what concerns that?

I'd put it in the same category as a lot of the "schoolgirl" horror films
coming out of Japan, like Uzumaki and Tomie. If you like the tone of
those, you'll probably dig Memento Mori as well.

I saw "Whispering Corridors" which had similar setting - and I believe
"Memento Mori" is some sort of a sequel at least on the Korean title -
and consider it to be very different. The same for "Nightmare" which
is much inferior even though it has some nice horror atmosphere.
Japanese I remember "Birth of the Wizard" (or was it the other one?)
and I didn't like it very much.

You talking about the Eko Eko Azuraku/Misa the Dark Angel movies?

I really like this film a lot - its beautifully photographed, elegantly
stylish, a story that hooks you early and demands that you pay attention,
can be interpreted on different levels - and is about schoolgirl lesbians
and ghosts - works for me!

Yes, I think I only saw Eko Eko Azaraku II. That was called "Birth of
the Wizard" in English, right? My notes say it's the sequel to "Eko
Eko Azaraku/Wizard of Darkness". Well, I didn't like, some students
going from one side to the other. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood
that night. I saw "Fudoh" on the same week, if I'm not mistaken and
loved it though.

I was quite disappointed with the sequel, though it might have been a little
better technically. I have not seen the third because the original director
was not involved.

I liked the first two Misa movies alright, but I don't think they are the same
as MEMENTO MORI. They were more, I thought, special effects/gore horror films,
where MEMENTO MORI is more of a supernatural suspense film. And of course, FUDOH
is in a class all by itself! Or maybe in a class only occupied by it and STORY
OF RIKKI.

True dat, I think somewhere in all the confusion I meant to say that MEMENTO
MORI really isn't the same kind of film as the EKO EKO movies. I've given
myself the task of tying modern feminism in Japan to the trend in the new
wave of J-horror flicks . . . I'd love to be able to include MEMENTO MORI in
the discussion, but . . . so I'm holding off ordering a copy.

I've just heard, btw, that UZUMAKI is going to start making the art house
rounds around the end of October or November, starting in LA. Another VIZ
release.

Cool movie.. but I thought the story would have
been better written as a suspense/thriller without
the "horror" elements.. the ending was kind of cheesy
