A terrific, if at times nasty, psychological thriller, FATAL LOVE
(1993) stars Ellen Chan as the undercover cop who starts to fall for the
criminal she's investigating, played by Michael Wong.

Ellen Chan's nude scenes (the only film she has done them for, and which
along with the violence earned the film a Category 3 rating) have made
this disc a collector's item in Hong Kong and consequently it's become
very hard to find. Letterboxed with English subtitles. Bidding opens at
$17.99

Thanks for reading

Erm...how can you have this disc and claim it has no subs? Unless you've
never watched it!!

Don't know whether you have seen it yet - but resident HK film critic Fonoroff
has published his reviews from 1988-1997 - some 600 reviews of all - many of
them fairly obscure films. Now of course there has been some acrid debate as to
whether anyone wants to read Fonoroff's reviews - they tend to be quite negative
for the most part and I found many of them quite irritating - but still somewhat
comprehensive for that period of time. Of course we can wait for Goomer to
translate his Spanish HK cinema books into English!

The copy I have I have of watched, and the disc has no subtitles.

Miles by the way, loved your book, thought it was a refeshing change of pace
to the review books. But..... I still think there needs to be a huge
Leonard Maltin style book full of reviews. I heard John Charles was
attempting this, hope he has brought along some help.

I frankly can't begin to explain why your LD is unsubbed. I've had 3 copies over
the years and, naturally, all have had subs. I guess you may have a bootleg that
has been put in the Star cover but why or how anyone would do this remains a
great mystery. I'm not sure about the VCD (if there is one) but Star's VCD's
normally replicate the LD transfer.

Anyway, if you want a subbed laserdisc of this film, feel free to bid.

Thanks for the kind words re. my book. I may yet be doing such a book as you
decribe, but no confirmation yet. John's book is completed and while it is a
review book (of over 1000 movies) it will be fairly in depth and won't be Maltin
style; McFarland are publishing it so expect a hefty (US$50 minimum) price tage,
but I'm sure it will be worth it as John as laboured long and hard over it and
if you know his reviews from "Video Watchdog" you know what to expect.

Meanwhile John moderates the Asian film discussion board. Pop on over and take a
look:

Why would I pay $50.00 for opinions of guy guy who is a shut in, who lives with
his grandmother, and gives subpar Tai Seng product great reviews because he's
payed off by them? Please someone give me a reason. I'd rather read Goomers
book and read him overpraise all the new stuff and short change the more
superior old stuff. If the only two books are John Charles & Gommers and I'm
forced at gunpoint to buy one of them, then Goomer has my money.

The VCD is subtitled.

You must be assuming that it has no subs due to the fact
that it's a Star release. It is one of the very few Star LD
releases that DOES indeed have subs. I have one so I
know for a fact that it does.

O.K O.K, I think that is clear now. My disc has no subs, yours and others
does, end of story. I don't understand it, maybe it's from Singapore and
was lisenced under STAR. Ibrought it with other discs from Singapore.

Presumably if it's a Singaporean disc it's also cut; they're pretty ruthless
on "the sexy stuff" over there. I'd be interested to know if it has the same
cover as the HK disc.
