:D Thanks Tran. That's exactly the kind of incentive I need
to continue making strips. Not that I didn't enjoy the posts
from other people here, but you have to admit that Tran said
it best; I'm faxing his CV to Hallmark right now.
Expect a new strip soon... possibly this Friday.

The context told me that is what it was. But I just had to be sure.

I can wait on the strip. Now that I know it is coming.
But please tell us before then what the delay was. Inquiring minds

You can laugh; about a year ago I was chasing a guy who I'd bought
some software from about some changes, he was answering his mail. I
finally called him at home in the US (I live in the UK) and a woman
answered. I asked to speak to Joe and the woman told me that she was
his mother and she'd gone 'round to his apartment the day before to
see him and found him dead on the sofa having had a massive heart
attack.

You aren't using your news reader correctly then since most can be
configured not to show the quoted material to to skip to the unquoted
material.
Additional issues to consider:
1) some people read 2000 articles a day and want to have context for
comments.
2) A. Top-posting
Q. What is the most annoying thing on Usenet.
3) Usenet isn't about /your/ convenience. Remember that literally
thousands of people may read your reply. So don't be selfish,
consider that the anti-top-posting standards exist for reasons and
those reasons don't revolve around you but the millions of Usenet
readers.
4) You ever had to go to deja.com while doing a STFW and wasted hours
of valuable time because people with small dicks couldn't bother to
trim useless material from their replies and insisted on removing all
context from their words because they thought they were the only
person who mattered?[0]

[0] Ok I really like #4. Maybe one day I will write the diffinative
rant against top posting and to make it on topic here I will do it all
in block text. I feel inspired.
I see things as such:

Half as much.
And over the course of 7 days the context is still there.
A: Because it fouls the order in which people
read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?
A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet
e-mail?
-- ozbear
And there is a reason you keep having this debate. Because top
posters are a nuisance. Thy do not trim. If top posters just
bothered to trim their posts you could probibly cut the deja archive
system requirments in half and the drive space could probibly be cut
in a 1/4th. S->N would go up dramatically. Don't stop top posting
because you know it pisses people off, stop doing it because life and
the usenet isn't about you. It is about others that read what you
write and when you top post you waste more peoples time than you save
them.
Here is a link I put together some time ago on the subject:
<url:http://asciipr0n.com/fp/linux/top-posting.txt>
Just think for a moment: Almost every arcive or hosting service for
mailing lists and usenet has an anti-top-posting policy. Things also
generally on the list are trolling, fraud and talking about illegal
things. They all agre on those 4 things. Top posting is seen by the
majority of the people in-the-know as one of the 4 deadly sins of
lists. Even MS says in their faqs that it is bad.
People get killfiled for it. I have killfiled people for it
in other groups. Every person who posts replies in this group other
than yourself is a non-top-poster. We all thing ASCII is great. We
all know top posting is bad. Beyond that we probibly agree on
nothing.[0] Yet you seem to think your preferance to not trim and to
top post because it is convineiant for you is all fine and dandy.
[0] lucinda or currier?
emacs or vi or notepad?
ab or ob?
The answer is in the original... just read the star'd text. :)
I forget that a lot too. Although since I have had a few items
sitting around that I never posted I have been using them.
Here is one I was working on but wasn't able to get it right.
It needs some work on the right hand side, some water on the left and
it needs a troll. All diddles welcome on this one as I hope it might
become a gift to the usenet form aa-a.
A troll responded to is a troll fed.

Why would you? (clue: old text lines start with a '>'. If you have read

Very different animal! If you are a regular reader of a group you can
safely assume that you have already read the older lines and go straight
for the second newest line. If you are reading it in a threaded format
you don't need the second newest line and can go straight for the newest
line (I often ignore interesting looking threads for a few days to let
them "mature" so I can read them more quickly, this also works well for
lurking). If you read the post out of context (which is also quite
common) it's nice to have the whole thing there (well, enough of it to
give a bit of context). Properly quoted text works for all these
different types of reading. Top posting does not.
Usenet would be a very boring place without flames. :-)

Or, they have learned that it is less stressful in the long run to have
a news reader that don't allow them to keep a lot of old junk lying
around (IOW, it is a perfectly sensible preference). They probably think
of their choice as "self cleaning".
Man, that's gotta hurt...

ObASCII : ¥??
^^^^^^ compressed ASCII text, the original of which read
"Compression is computationally costly and does not necessarily help in
record keeping. Particularly if it's only ever likely to be used by PC

What you are talking about is archives kept on some server somewhere.
What I was talking about is a feature of some news readers and why
somebody might prefer that feature. One is a sysadmin's task and the
other is a personal usability preference. I don't see what those two
things have to do with each other.
