POETS OF THE WEEK
~ This week's featured poets are: JONATHAN HAYES and CHARLES PORTOLANO
JONATHAN HAYES' (San Francisco, California) new book, T(HERE), is
being showcased at the LA Times Book Festival this year.
CHARLES PORTOLANO (Fountain Hills, Arizona) started writing poetry 14
years ago to celebrate the birth of his daring, darling, daughter
Valerie. He wanted to preserve all the memories of the first time she
walked, talked. Valerie was born with many obstacles to overcome
giving him much to write about. Writing soon became his way of saving
his sanity. Valerie is doing great now; she is quite the young
writer. This year he has been published in The Clark Street Review,
Plato�s Tavern, Poetswest, Nomad�s Choir, Bellowing Ark, PKA�s
Advocate, Pegasus, The Saturday Diner, The American Dissident, The
Pink Chameleon, The Back Street Review, and Soundings Review. He has
a new collection of poetry out, Storytelling.

HOMELESS CHRONICLES: FROM ABRAHAM TO BURNING MAN by GERARD SARNAT

unafraid to temper bold statements with enough humor and compassion
to make us nostalgic for his ecstatic profound view of life. He sings
to us through the voice of a universal poet. Sarnat s written one
hell of an exciting book! Suzanne Burns, Misfits and Other Heroes
among other poetry collections.
Gerry Sarnat's tough, witty, language-obsessed poems are both a post-
holocaust reconstruction of his family s history and a progression
towards a declaration of his own intention. In his seventh decade,
after a medical career that included doctoring the homeless, the poet
declares: I must give birth. I admire the skill of the poetry often
as precise as a diagnosis as well as his labor-like decision. The
poems may be unsentimental but they are also, importantly, emotional.

SECOND SUNDAY POETRY SERIES: This open mic poetry reading series,
hosted by Alex M. Frankel, takes place on the second Sunday of every
month at the Cafe Alibi in Old Town Pasadena. Great local and
national poets are featured. They perform their work, sell and sign
books and mingle with audience members and open mic participants.
