GEOGRAPHY

I live, precarious, in now,
With roots that hold tenaciously to then,
Conforming to the ruthlessness of how
And face the glowing hope of when.

I am threatened by perhaps,
The multi-pathed directions out of whys
Whose branches fade with time's collapse
And destiny, alternatives, denies

This is very clever. If it is published in a book one day, people will be
quoting from it for years to come!

I can't find anything to criticise in it. I wish it was longer, but
that's just me. I suppose when you're ''on a roll'' writing a witty poem
it is hard to keep it going for more than four verses or so, you can then
find the subject has been exhausted.

I am glad you liked it. It was just fun with words. None of my stuff has
ever been published in the sense of being in books. This newsgroup is the
only exposure I have ever had and I have no idea how to go about interesting
a publisher in my work. The barriers they put up to new authors, and
especially poets, is too daunting for me to even try.

It amazes me that you have not tried to have your poems published yet,
Jan. When I emailed part of the Poe thread to my parents, to share the
humour with them, they were amazed by your contributions and speculated
that you might be a famous poet, just amusing yourself on the newsgroups!

I do agree, however, that some publishers are more concerned with
''playing safe'' than accepting work by new poets.

Do you get the Writers and Artist Yearbook in the USA? That is a very
useful book with very detailed information on all kinds of book
publishers. I am afraid that the poetry publishers are jumbled up with
the fiction publishers, but the information always states whether they
accept unsolicited manuscripts, or wheter you need an agent. It lists
agents too.

Your work is of a much higher standard than some of the poetry that some
of the small presses accept. (I know this because I have had around 20
poems published so far and read the other poems in the anthologies. The
poems are of a surprising variety of quality) UK publishers, in
particular, would love some of your whimsical poems and the ones about
animals.

I have quite a few poetry publishing addresses on my website, both UK and
USA ones. If you like I could email a list to you.

I know one address in particular, in Peterborough, England. They bring
out at least 4 anthologies per year. They like to give new poets a
chance. They do charge contributors (a reduced price) for copies of
anthologies, but the books are not expensive and sometimes they actually
pay royalties. They have published quite a few of my poems. I know they
would like your work. If you wrote to them with an International Reply
Coupon, they would send you details of forthcoming themed anthologies:

Forward Press
1-2 Wainman Road
Woodstone
Peterborough
Cambridgeshire PE2 7BU
UK

Tel: +44 (0)1733 230762

(or if you rang they might just send information anyway). I recently gave
this address to someone else and a few weeks later, heard that he had a
poem accepted by them. They have several book titles: Anchor Press,
Triumph House, Rhyme Arrival (a magazine) also Arrival Press.

I hope you get the time to give them a try. (by the way it's best not to
mention putting poems on newsgroups, publishers consider that to be work
already published)

I am highly complimented by your concern and your admiration, but I have
little experience in the world of literature. As I noted in the thread under
"Dope", I am a professional industrial designer and am trying to exist at
present on $400 per month social security plus my savings while trying to
find (unsuccessfully at the moment) work to sustain myself. I really do not
have the energy nor the motivation to serve hamburgers in McDonald's which
at present seems the only opening.Nobody seems particularly interested in
getting me into something more in the line of my talents and training, so I
spend time writing poetry and other diverse diversions. The idea of spending
money I need to live on promoting non-remunerative talents is, at the
moment, a bit on the foolish side. I printed out your information and will
think about your advice, but I am timorous at this kind of adventure.

Yes, it is horrible being unemployed, this has happened to me twice and
it seems to last forever. I am sorry to hear this.

OK then, here is a contact that does pay for poetry:

The Writer's BBS - Pays cash
http://writersbbs.com/html/submissions.html
Seeking works of short fiction or poetry in any genre and non-fiction
about the art of writing. Pays up to $10 per story.
Brian Rickman - Host: 146.115.130.105 - Friday December 19, 1997
15:02:53

...That also has a theme to do with a poem you posted here recently. Also
they would probably accept submissions by email, the address of which you
can obtain from the website. There's a lot of this kind of information on
a website called Inkspots. I hope that might be more useful.

It's a nice thought, but at the rate of $10 per story, I would have to turn
out around two stories per hour to make a living, under the assumption that
all my work is acceptable. I am simply not that prolific. Thanks for the
thought, though.

Hi there Sara,
I know this is not my thread but I just spotted your reply to jan.
As you know I am also unemployed at present and I find the information
you give jan will also be, I hope, beneficial to me, so I will use it.
Thank you for publishing it (sorry I intruded into your discussion with
jan)

That's OK John. Glad to be of help. Here's one very useful, very
detailed URL with many websites/emails of publishers - it also tells you
who pays for work and who doesn't.
http://www.inkspot.com/classifieds/mkt.html

My own website has a lot of publishers on this URL:
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Metro/2853/3.htm

and here's my link with the Forward Press competition details (with
other competitions):
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Metro/2853/10.htm

I made my website mostly as a help page for poets, as well as to show my
own work, so those addresses are there to be copied and pasted. I can't
guarantee that all of the publishers are still at the same addresses, so
if you find that anyone isn't, let me know and I will delete them or
amend their details.

Also here's the address I gave to Jan in a previous post on this thread:

> Forward Press
> 1-2 Wainman Road
> Woodstone
> Peterborough
> Cambridgeshire PE2 7BU
> UK
>
> Tel: +44 (0)1733 230762

(.....From UK dial 01733 230762) ...this publisher has several imprints
which do poetry magazines. It may be possible to make money with one or
two of these. One is called Rhyme Arrival. Rhyme Arrival favour rhyming
poetry and pay prize money for poems voted the best. Anchor Books have a
magazine too, same address as above, but the name of the magazine
escapes me. Just phone up and ask to speak to the Anchor Press editor
for some guidelines, or send them an s.a.e. Some of the magazines pay
out money or book tokens for every poem published. In this way you stand
to make more money than with the books (I have made about £2.95 in
royalties. Like, wow.)

Your only 'investment' would be a subscription (around £15, in most
cases I think, for a year) for a quarterly magazine. If you were
prolific enough for each category, you could do pretty well.

Incidentally, Forward Press have a competition this year with big money
prizes. Anyone published in any of their books is automatically entered.
It's called ''Top 100 1998 Winnere''.The first prize is £3,000 - 2 x 2nd
prizes of £500 - 4 x third prizes of £250, 10 x fourth prizes of 100 and
no less than 83 fifth prizes of £50. I had a poem published with them
this year, so I am hoping!

I hope this info is of help.
