Self Portrait

A contented little pig I am,
Endowed with every gift of man:
Every thought, every notion, every poem and song.
I'm Truth to the Tooth. I know no wrong.

A beast of many well-earned honors.
A hog amongst my piglet brothers.
Oh, what a marvelous creature I am,
Someday I'll make a splendid ham.

I really like this. Made me smile. Made me sad, too.
Third line would scan better (imo) if the last "and" was changed to
", every"
Last phrase in line four made me stumble, expecting more syllables.

Thanks for posting,
Norma

Norma,
Thank you for your comments. They means a lot to me.

Self deprecating humor is a *good* thing, not a sad thing. It keeps us
honest. I want to be honest--at least as long as we can laugh about such
things...

Thank you so much.--Jay Hatfield

Just wanted to say that I will defend to the death your right to be a
piggy. Also that piggy's right not to be a ham. I suspect I am too late
in that wish, however <grin>

As a vegetarian, it's hard not to be sad at the thought of a piggy
becoming ham, no matter how light-hearted the vehicle. I shall try
harder not to let my emotions influence how I read piggy poems in the
future.

Carry on,
Norma

You know Jay, with a little application on your part.
You could turn your poems from humorous doggerel
to quite funny poems.

Thanks, Mop.

I'll keep plugging away. I appreciate the encouragement.

Who knows, maybe I'll get it right one of these days!

Good, I am glad you took it the right way. I am not the most tactful person,
at times.

It is not that hard, Jay. You have a natural ear that needs a little
tweaking. Learning the disciplines involved in rhyme will do that.

Rhyme generally needs a form to distinguish it from doggerel. Simple end
rhymes with mismatching line lengths make for a swervy ride when reading.
Look at some basic forms to encase your work into. You will be surprised at
what a difference it makes.

I liked this poem, very amusing.

But Emerson is a bloody idiot if he really believes this.

It is impossible to imagine what the future has in store for us.
Our
imagination is just a shadow of the creativity, beauty and
wonders
the universe has in store. I find it shocking that people admire
such limited and distorted thinking by someone that
obviously hasn't a clue about the qualities and splendor of
nature.
