Those are the same shoes that he has worn for the past 10 years. Shabby. We can understand how the bottoms of shoes can be worn out, but the tops? It's almost as if he has been on his knees and scuffing the tops while doing that. What could he have been doing on his knees that would rip and tear the tops of the shoes?
