Hi, this is in response to Leela's msg about classes near
newton. I live in wellesley, and I take classes with the Boston
Ballet School. I'm 23, and I take adult beginner classes. I
danced when I was young and I started again about a year
ago. There is both a Newton and Boston studio, but I think
the best teacher is Kristen Beckwith who teaches beginner
adult classes in Newton. (my teacher) It depends whether
you are an absolute beginner or not, because we are nearing
the end of the year, so the class is more advanced. You can
email me with any questions. mael...@mintz.com

Is it OK for a man to wear women's leotards and tights for a dance class?
Most males I have asked say they like the feel of these clothes more than
the thick male dance tights. And the leotards and tights for women look
better and have more color choices than the men do. Is that true? Would
it be wrong to go buy these clothes for men, or would they get laughed
at? And would men get laughed at if they wear these clothes to class?

No problem at all, as long as you observe a couple of precautions: (1) get
black or navy blue, not pink! (2) Make sure they're thick enough to be
opaque. Sheer tights are girls' tights. And if you simply go shopping in
the hosiery department, watch out for that conspicuous gusset between the
legs; that's a giveaway & may cause titters. Danskin make some nice women's
tights that do not have this. (3) Wear the tights over the leotard, not the
other way around. There's a tabu about this; I think it's silly (& counter-
productive, since the upward pull of a leo over tights would counteract the
tendency toward what Leigh Witchel has aptly named the "unibutt"). But I
have never had the courage to challenge it in class. Of course, a T-shirt
is always acceptable.

Tights are unisex. So are unitards, for that matter.

No they would not be laughed at. Many men like the woman's styles better.
Also, the dancewear companies are making less and less clothes for men. So
alot have to resort to the women's wear.

I'd say YES OF COURSE with the tights. For the leotards... sure, but
depending on how tall you are you might have probs finding a leo with a
small bust size. Women's leos are cut differently than men's, I'd think.

And the pink ones with frilly lace and flowers or little kittens printed
on
tend to look silly on most males ;)

> Most males I have asked say they like the feel of these clothes more than
> the thick male dance tights.

Perfectly well understandable.

> And the leotards and tights for women look better and have more
> color choices than the men do.

Might be. Actually, I'd say that a wider color choice is quite
probable...
But just go try one on and look if the cut suits you...
Or ask guys from a college or university near you who do gymnastics/
tumbling/ dancing, where they buy their unitards, leotards,
tights, etc.
Maybe you only need to go to a bigger or more specialized shop to get a
wider choice of dancing clothes.

> Would it be wrong to go buy these clothes for men, or would they get
> laughed at?

Is this exclusive?
I mean, is it WRONG to do something, if there's SOMEONE who laughs about
it?
I'd say buy whatever leo and tights fit you and feel comfortable. I
can't
see any wrong in looking in the women's gym clothes department for
clothes
if you couldn't find any in the men's.
And so IF someone laughed at you? Most pple laugh at something they
don't
understand or that just escapes their narrow view of how the world is
supposed to be and to work. SO WHAT?!
If you feel silly, just take them serious, pretend you're happy of
having
made them laugh, and laugh with them. Then the laugh's on your side. :)

> And would men get laughed at if they wear these clothes to class?

Could be. Could be that no. Depends on how those clothes look on
you (if you went and bought a pink and fuchsia leo, I wouldn't wonder)
and whether you wear them to be *noticed* or because they are more
functional or more comfortable.
Apart from dance clothes and dancing school: if YOU think you look good
in whatever clothes you are wearing, you can wear really weird stuff
and some pple won't even notice, and others will think, well, that's
weird, but hell, it suits you.

I'd say, don't let your choice of clothes distract you too much from
your dancing. :)

I wouldn't like them either, but for a different reason. They
show off surgical scars, too.

In my ballet class at Texas A&M, tights and leotard are required.
I also wear a t-shirt under the leotard because the leotard really
shows off a huge scar resulting from a surgery I had in 1974.
Even with a v-neck t-shirt, the top inch or two of the scar is
visible.

Well, Shannon, on another thread, said many of the women wished the men
would show off their legs. And I guess the wishing goes both ways. :-)

Saw one in black crushed velvet that would never work on me--alas--but
would probably look great on some guys. Very 18th-century!

Ah, yes...Oliver Goldsmith: "The loud laugh that spoke the vacant mind."
Been hearing that laugh off & on all my life.

Kind of you to say so, but there are other issues to be considered. Even
with no objection from wife, teacher, or others in the class, I think I
would perish in the overheated atmosphere of the typical New York dance
studio: radiators that never turn off in the Winter, & unbearable heat in
the Summer. And in long-sleeved velvet? No thank you....

Sounds wonderful... but those velvet things are W.A.R.M.

I nearly melted when wearing a velvet renaissance dress for
performances where I only had to play recorder. Never would get the
idea wearing those DANCING... ;)

Velvet dance clothes are cool - I mean nice and warm - to wear in
winter, though, with some sort of sleeveless vest over it. :)
Looks absolutely smashing on pple with a dancer's physique.
Then again, most of those dancer's physique pple could wear
a potato bag and still look smashing... ;)
*sigh*
