Black footed tights over leotard.

There are several options:
1) Black footed tights over a white short-sleeved leotard
Black ballet slippers.
2) Black footed tights and wear a white t-shirt with short
sleeves.
Black ballet slippers.
3) A long-sleeve black unitard with feet, that has a zipper
up the back, like that by Bal-Togs.
Black ballet slippers.
4) (For younger dancers teens & younger) Some schools have
this, however the above dress also applies.
a) Light blue footed tights over a white short-sleeved
leotard. A white t-shirt may be substituted for leotard.
White ballet slippers.
b) Light blue long-sleeved unitard with feet with
zipper up back. Like those by Bal-Togs.
White ballet slippers.
Also, I heard of one school where boys wore a long-sleeved
light blue unitard. And they wore silver-colored metallic
ballet slippers.
This is what is usually worn in ballet dance classes.

What to wear? Oh...all sorts of things. If you want to be conventional,
the choice is black tights and a white T-shirt. Shoes can be black or
white, although I find that white shoes are useful if you have problems
remembering to keep pointing your feet, for example when returning from
de'gage's.
But there are lots of alternatives, & people are less fussy now than they
used to be 30 years ago. I've seen (& worn) everything from unitards to
bike shorts. For Winter, good nylon/lycra tights by M. Stevens or Bal-Togs
(black or dark blue) are good. The last two Summers, I've kept cool wearing
Danskin Style 18 tights. (You'll have to get up your courage & look in
the women's hosiery departments for these. No sweat.) They're lighter &
thinner, but opaque. Sweat pants are popular too, but they conceal your line
& some teachers can't stand them. My observation is that the prettiest
girls seem to be the ones most likely to wear sweats. :-(
Then there's that business of leotards...the tradition is that only women
wear them over their tights. Don't believe it. I've been wearing one
over my tights the last month or so (keeps them from sagging), & the world
hasn't come to an end yet.
The only rule I observe is that if I know I'm going to be in for a diffi-
cult class in which I may make a fool of myself, I dress as conservatively
as I can: back to black tights & white T-shirt.

During the summer, I wear black or grey bicycle shorts, T shirt,
white ballet slippers with no socks, and a beard. In the winter,
replace the bicycle shorts with black cotton dance pants, and
sometimes add socks.

Forgot to mention that I sometimes wear T-shirts with logos on them.
One says "DANCE AS EVER" (wonder where that came from :). But my
favorite says, "If ballet was easy, they'd call it football." That
has elicited many comments, all of them favorable. (Thanks, Cathy!)
