Why not try just drawing or painting something anyway? Plenty of people to advise, here.

Dont get Paint by Numbers but get one of those velvety marker by numbers
which can be obtained at most toy stores espec ones with cheap easy toys and
can be hung on thhe wall proudly when you are done.
My local Hobby Lobby has an ad in their store where you can
take classes to learn how to paint by numbers from some lady
who got good at it.
I guess they sell the stuff too.

Cages, blood, feathers and diesel fuel.
Come on Artboy, that's TERRIBLE advice! It'll take him HOURS or maybe
DAYS to draw all those little squiggly shapes and write the numbers
into them! And then he'll STILL have to paint it! I think it's much
better if he just BUYS a Paint-By-Numbers kit rather than trying to
make his own.
To use your analogy, what if he said he wanted to buy a Whopper from
McDonalds' and you told him to go and buy some bread and some meat and
a pickle and some lettuce and some ketchup? It just doesn't make sense!
The boy wants Paint-By-Numbers, let him have it!

I like that. She got really good at it.
Painting by numbers. Yeah.
"So what exactly is it that you do, Mrs. Gilfeather?"
"Well, i teach Painting by Numbers down at the Hobby Lobby."
"Really? That's *so* interesting. Tell me more!"
"Well, it took many years, but after some basic math and colour
theory, here i am! It's all been such a whirlwind of colouring in.
Sometimes i can hardly believe it myself. I wasn't much use at first,
but with time and practice, soon i wasn't going over the lines any
more. It started to get so that i didn't even have to look up the
colours in the chart - i just *knew*."
"Wow! What an astonishing tale!Where can i study Painting by Numbers?"
"Well, why don't you come to one of my classes? If you try hard
enough, you could get good at it, like me."
"Super."
"Mmmmm."
I want to paint by numbers too. Let me add my voice to those who
demand information and support for their colouring-in passion.
I think you should get some *body paint* and smear it all over naked
flesh. Then, get a big 10X10 sheet of paper and roll around on it.
This would be more fun than the paint-by-numbers thing, and you would
have a very large piece to hang in your loft. Plus, strangers who
visit will have to look at your jimmy in the painting (unless you
smear it too badly).
Be careful not to smear the jimmy...
T.
ps i am not picking on the paint by numbers person, but I do think
everybody's responses have been rather amusing

I once saw the wonderful Julia Child, state in an interview that every
so often, she too likes to eat McDonald's food. If its good enough
for the French Chef, than I should be allowed to paint by numbers!
After all, I don't live in North Korea.

Look, I'm not some "keep the man down, fat-cat republican type" like
my friend WWS, I doubt I can afford to go all out and take up painting
things on my own. The funds just aren't there; my car insurance alone
is $270 a month.
I'll give you an example:
GREG'S EXAMPLE:
Today, when I was on my continuing quest for a Paint by Numbers set I
stopped at several retail art supply stores, and I saw that it would
cost me hundreds of US dollars to take up the hobby that way, and that
doesn't even guarantee I'll be any good! No, I'd much rather buy some
affordable Paint by Numbers sets, complete them of my own volition,
and then pass them off as original works. Is that too much to ask?
Perhaps, in a few years I can make a proper transition into "real"
painting, but until then I'd prefer to do this artistic expression
thing in baby steps.
&&
Mr. Hole
I saw these today when I was on my continuing quest. Needless to say
I didn't buy any; they looked like thrift store coloring books.
&&
Mr. Hole
I don't need no stinkin' classes. How hard could it be to
Paint-by-Numbers?
> I guess they sell the stuff too.
Not here they don't. Today, I visited 3 (that's 1+1+1=3) hobby shops,
and none of them had Paint-by-Numbers! Although, in one of these
stores I did see a brand new version of the old board game "RISK" set
in the future. It looked nifty! They wanted 45 bucks for it, so I
dropped it like a hot potato.
&&
Mr. Hole
I guess the ones I went to today on my continuing quest to find a
Paint-by-Numbers set weren't very good, huh? The closest I came was a
water-color coloring book at Michael's.

hth. Have phun. :)
I remember for I got tubes of all necessary colours, some oil and turps, a
canvas board and a beginner's book for less money than one of these silly
kits.
If you want to get started go to Winsor and Newton and get one of their
beginners kits and books. You'll do much better. Student quality oils and
acrylics will do to start with but if you're interested in water colour,
don't stint yourself - get artists' quality.
Hope a serious answer isn't OT!!! :o)
