Mural Painting

I want to paint a mural on my son's bedroom wall. It's anime/cartoon
characters (sort of a "Dragonball Z meets Spongebob Squarepants").

My question is: What type of paints do I buy? What quantities should I buy
the paints in? Also, I've heard a sealant is required; if so, what kind?
What colors do I need? I know that if I buy the wheel colors, along with
white and black for tints and shades, I should be able to reproduce pretty
much any color of the rainbow.

Any help would be appreciated.
