Eliot Clark was born in 1883, in New York City. Son of Walter Clark,
also an American Impressionist painter. Eliot Clark was an
impressionist and a tonalist, greatly influenced by his father and his
friends John Twachtman, whom he studied under at the Art Students League
in 1897. He and his father both painted in Gloucester Mass, with Edward
Potthast, Bruce Crane, Joseph DeCamp, and Frank Duveneck. At the age of
9 Eliot was exhibiting at the New York Watercolour Club. At age 16 he
was selected to exhibit at the National Academy of Design. In 1901
Eliot travelled across the country painting. Eliot visited Giverny
because he was attracted to the work of Claude Monet. After this he
contines to travel, and paint.
After traveling he returned to New York and established himself as a
self supporting landscape artist. He has won a number of awards.
Served as an instructor at the Art Students League. He was president of
the National Watercolour Society 1919-1923. He was president of the
National Academy of Design from 1956-1959. He also published a book on
the National Academy of Design. He also wrote books on the following
artist John H. Twachtman, and Theodore Robinson. He wrote articles
about Childe Hassam, Emil Carlsen, and J. Alden Weir. He taught at the
University of Virginia, in Charlottesville and ended up retiring there.
Eliot Clark died at the age of 97.
