SONIC CIRCUITS V
ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL

Connect with the circuit:
Be on a CD, broadcast around the world;
Receive multiple diffusions of your work across the US and abroad;
Produce your own festival eventÑwe will facilitate your programming.

Just send in your electronic musical work (if you plugged something in to make
it, it qualifies Ñ style no object). Over 100 composers have been programmed
since 1993.

Sonic Circuits, now in its fifth year, is a festival with a difference; it
comprises a caravan of curated works which travels the world to form the basis
for many events throughout the season. Any musical works which involve
electronic technology (e.g. works for electro-acoustic tape, live performance
with electronics, computer pieces, video art...) may be submitted for program
consideration. The selected works receive multiple performances at venues
across the globe and may be featured on the highlights CD which is sent to
numerous radio stations.

The CD, video-compilation, scores and lists of live acts are sent to each
venue
as a program framework, which may then be supplemented by locally-produced
material.

The Sonic Circuits season begins in September, 1997 and continues throughout
the
year. It is easy for you to host a leg of this international festival: simply
contact ACF for complete details. Schools, theaters, lofts, galleries, bars
construction sites and courtyards have all been home to presentations.
Minimum
requirements: PA system, playback equipment (video projector and lighting
desireable). Pre-recorded program material will be sent to you in October:
mix
it up with student work or live performers and you have a show.

Send applications to:
Philip Blackburn, ACF-SC, 332 Minnesota Street, E-145, Saint Paul, MN
55101-1300, USA.

IL 60115, Aria...@aol.com. Monthly publication. A "new and
unique publication focusing on enhancing the quality of life.
Optimal Life is a comprehensive publication covering virtually
all aspects of life including personal development,
health-n-fitness, relationships, home, family, finances and
community. We concentrate on solutions, not problems and aim to
provide information, motivation, and inspiration. Our
publication has a slight New Age feel to it but we are aiming to
reach the mainstream population. Our focus is on holistic,
natural, and alternative lifestyles." WHAT THEY'RE LOOKING FOR:
"Informative articles on life affirming subjects from
professional as well as aspiring freelance writers. We are
looking for articles on any subject that can improve the quality
of life or enhance the community and planet as a whole. We are
not seeking personal opinions or fiction articles. We are looking
for articles ranging from 1000 to 3000 words. Payment is $100
for articles and more for assigned or feature articles." Email
submissions okay. COPYRIGHT: Buys FNASR. "Writer retains
copyright." TIPS: We are looking for good writers who can write
articles that will appeal to a wide audience. Stories should be
in-depth and include resources for the reader to delve into."

departments on Travel, Sports, Religion, Relationships,
Arts&Entertainment, Image/Fashion, Health/Fitness,
Career/Education/Entrepreneurship Astrology, Community
Involvement and Fund-Raising, Special events for the Singles
center, Community and non-profit single groups, a national
non-profit single groups database. "At present we have an online
magazine and we will be publishing a print version beginning with
the fall." Monthly publication. Email submissions okay. Pays on
publication. WHAT THEY'RE LOOKING FOR: Non-fiction Feature issues
assigned by publisher; non-fiction informational articles/columns
on regular department topics at discretion of author. All
articles should have a singles slant. Features: 1500 - 2000
words, pays $100, publisher owns all rights. Department columns:
500 - 1000 words, pays $50 or trade, publisher has one time
rights, author owns rights . Future plans include writing
contests for Fiction- Romance and Humour. TIPS: "Looking for well
researched and written articles on single living. Our theory is
that singles are living by rules created by the minority married
society and we need to look at the reality of living today
instead of just trying to fit into an outdated mold. We wish to
impress on businesses the reality of who the consumers are,
namely mostly singles, and that their advertising needs to be
slanted towards singles and their needs instead of the "nuclear"
family which is only 10% of the population. Of course they need
a classy, clean, healthy environment to do that, namely The
Singles Center, and our online and print magazines. This is a
personally funded entrepreneurial adventure at present but as the
business grows, full-time Editor and Staff writer positions will
be created." (Info rec'd Wed.Apr.23, confirmed Apr.24)

Alexandria Digital Literature
Kathy Ice, Executive Editor. 701 5th Avenue, 43rd Floor, Ste.
4380, Seattle, WA 98104. Online publisher of speculative fiction
of all lengths. "We are currently looking to buy wide-area
network distribution rights of previously published works. We are
especially interested in shorter fiction, and in works that are
no longer in print. For exclusive wide-area network distribution
rights, we pay a royalty of 25% of the retail price; for
non-exclusive rights the rate is 10%. Authors receive a 5%
royalty bonus if they waive the advance (bumping the rates to 30%
and 15% respectively). The advance is 1/2c/wd if the author
chooses to take it. Because electronic publishing is such a new
field, and because Alexandria's approach is in many ways unique,
we strongly suggest that authors contact us for further
information before submitting (or deciding not to submit)."

Highlights For Children
HIGHLIGHTS FOR CHILDREN, 805 Church Street, Honesdale, PA 18431:
Rich Wallace, Manuscript Coordinator. This secular publication
buys fiction of 200 to 900 words for children 2 to 12. (They now
want beginning reader fiction of up to 500 words for 6-8 year
olds--editor for this is Beth Troop.) They pay $120 up for ALL
rights on acceptance. They report and pay quickly, but may hold
material for years before publishing. They assign writers
personal editors after a sale. No pen and paper puzzles used
here. HIGHLIGHTS has now piloted an international edition!
(Canada & South Africa, primarily). This will use British
English. They are open to writers with expertise in specific
geographic areas. (Source: Children's Writers Market List)

Your Big Backyard
YOUR BIG BACKYARD, 8925 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA 22184-0001:
Donna Johnson, Editor. After a number of years of "recycling"
material, this nature magazine for 3-6 year olds is open to
fiction and nonfiction again. They sometimes use animal
protagonists, but the animal must run true to its real-life
characteristics. They probably buy all rights to material up to
1000 words. Pay is great: $500. (Source: Children's Writers

Affair De Coeur
3976 Oak Hill Dr., Oakland CA 94605-4931. Publisher: Louise
Snead. Monthly. ARTICLES: "Articles must be pertinent to the area
of publishing, writing, marketing, or the fiction romance genre."
Length: 2000 wds max; pays to $35 on publication for 1st NASR.
SHORT STORIES: "Short stories must be of romance with the
following GLs: (a) There are no limitations with regard to
setting. Time of setting may be historical, contemporary or
futuristic (b) Plots may be general romance or may include
suspense, mystery, or intrigue (c) There are no age restrictions
on the couple. Romances can range from young adult romances to
twilight romances. There are no restrictions on previous
relationship. (d) There are no racial or ethnic restrictions on
the couple. We welcome diversity as long as the portrayal of the
race or ethnic groups are realistic and non-stereotypical. (e)
Because of the short length of the story, we discourage a love
scene unless it is vital to the story. (f) The story should end
on a positive note. That does not necessarily mean that the
couple ends up together and lives happily ever after. It may mean
that the heroine realizes she is better off without the hero or
vica versa. (g) In order to avoid the feel of a 'true confession'
we encourage the author to write the story in third person.
However, if he/she does write it in the 1st person and it works,
it may be accepted." Length: max 2000 words; pays $35 on
publication for 1st NASR. Email submissions okay. No reprints.
Sample $5; subscription $35/year. (Source: The Gila Queen's Guide

Cedar Bay Press, a limited liability company, is an international
publisher and producer working for artists and authors to publish,
package, market, and merchandise their work.

About Book and Multimedia Publishing . . .
Cedar Bay Press, LLC, offers opportunities not provided by mass
market paperback or hardback publishers. Novel length fiction is
either serialized or first released in a digital book format. Our terms
are simple: you keep all the rights. Our royalties are the highest in
the industry: 80% of net sales.

A serialized novel is a multi-chapter paperback book series released
in two to five parts depending on length. The cover price is well-below
that of a mass market paperback or about $3.95 on average. A two part
serial could net on retail $7.90 and a five part novel about $15.60. This
can translate into a much higher percentage than that offered by

THE SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT PUBLISHING

In North America there are about 35 publishers who dominate 100%
of the traditional retail book shelves. If you want warm and fuzzy and
you want your title next to Stephen King or Daniel Steele in a retail outlet
you’ll have to see those publishers who own the shelves. Who are they?
Go to the paperback section of your favorite discount store, find the type of
book your manuscript is competing for and look at the copyright page where
you’ll find the publisher information. Most of the 35 publishers are on the
net and provide guidelines for submissions.

If you still can’t get published then try the 1,000+ independent publishers or
alternative presses.
