I have a Win 10 Home notebook and have some legacy apps I really need
installed on it, they installed and they work okay, and have been doing so
for seven months, including after the recent big W10 update.

Recently my Old PC went Blaaa! (Mobo) and as it was old and had been
repaired over the years it wasn't worth spending the required to get it
repaired this time.

A new one is now in use running Win 10 Pro... (no choice, Win 10 Home or
Pro only) It works...

Unfortunately the couple of legacy apps installed and running on the
Notebook Win 10 HOme will not play the game on the Desktop with Win 10 Pro
running the show.

Are there any major security differences between the Home and Pro versions
of W10 that might be poking a nose where not wanted and preventing the
legacy apps from installing correctly.?

Thanks
Dave

Are you letting windows 10 choose where it installs the app? If so it will
be in C:Program Files or C:Program Files(X86) directories both of which
(for your convenience and protection ;-) now have checks to make sure the
app is for that version of windows, if not it won't install. I found this
when trying to instal an old app. By creating another directory eg
C:Myprogs and intalling it in there it would install and then write
clicking on the app.exe file and choosing properties, I was then able to
set the compatability in my case XP so that it would run.

Thanks for your thoughts Alan.

Only Win and system apps are allowed to use those locations, all other
apps are installed in my Apps directory C:\Apps\nnnn

Yes, I've also manually played the compatibility game with various OS
types, and even allowed the W10 Compatibility checker to do the business,
no change though.

Thanks
Dave

PS: As I noted, installs okay on the W10 Home notebook, but will not on
the Desktop and W10 Pro (Same installer files and same named location
C:\Apps\...)

One thing to consider is if the old lagecy app is actually a 16 bit
one, in whcih case IIRC Win Pro which not allow them to install/work.
It only supports 32/64 bit apps.

If you have the 32 bit version of win 10 in your PC then 16 bit apps are
supported by enabling the NTVDM feature. However it looks like you are out
of luck if you have installed the 64 bit version. See:

Thanks for your thoughts, Chris, the main app in question is 32 bit.

I see....

Thanks Alan,
The app in question is 32 bit, both the Notebook (Win10 Home) and the
Desktop Win 10 Pro are 64 bit.

Aside from the fact it installed and works on the Notebook, the thing that
has me in a tantrum the most is... I can get it to sort of install on the
Desktop Win 10, but when run it gets as far as the splash screen then sits
there doing SFA until I quit it from the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Escape).

I've done a repair install, but it still remains in the previously
mentioned start state.

So at home, all in all, it's been a bit of a toilet week... Computer
broken, new one has Win 10, Set it up, Install apps again, a number of
stupid apps moaning about not being installed again, you need to purchase
a new license... Etc, (Expletive etcetera), Install legacy apps
problems... At least the networking troubles (Nothing to do with the new
computer) now sorted by Richard Brown... Well at least that's one out of
the set fixed.

'Wunce' upon a time, I was so enthusiastic about computers, now I'm just
plain worn out by the whole business...

I must admit that Windows 10 has dampened my enthusiasm somewhat too. After
years of trouble-free computing with XP it seems as though we've gone back
into the dark ages again.
