Has anyone got any ideas as to the type of varnish to use on wooden arrows
(water based or other?)

Some folks use shellack. You can also use wood oil, but apparently that
can make the arrows a bit softer.

Use Danish oil, apply a thin layer two or three times. It should give a
satin finish and will waterproof the arrow.

what about a mix or bees wax and mineral oil? ..... I have use that on
a self bow for water proofing.....You cut the melted wax with the oil
in a double boiler and make a paste out of it....Its not hard but it
is time comsuming.
