I just bought a used longbow, the guy who sold it to me did not know
anything about it and I am nearly as stumped. The only markings are Paul
Bunyan 300 and 45lbs. It is 62" tall end to end. I need to find out the
string length, and what length arrows to put in it.

Have you considered joining a club? people are very helpful - and will show
you the best way to shoot and all the technical details.

I am part of a club in upper Illinois. We only meet every few months, so I
cant have them help me for a while. I already know how to shoot, I even have
hunted with a bow.

To get a rough estimate. You can use a long bowstring. Tie a loop in one
end, like a square knot but pass the end thru a couple more times. String
the bow. Check the fistmele "brace height" and when you find a brace height
which looks good, measure the string. Measure it while under tension as it
probably stretches a good deal. "DON'T SHOOT IT"

I had used a "universal length" bow string on a 24# fiberglass stick bow
that used this method of regulating string length.

I see it doesn't have an AMO mark on it, which would make it easy.

I'd have to guess string length at around 59".

Better to guess it too long, you can always twist it down (remember to twist
in the direction that tightens the serving).

The "thread" covered parts of the string.

I just went through exactly what you're experiencing. I picked up a near-mint Paul Bunyan 300. It is rated at 50# at 28". Here are the specs......
Bow AMO is 64"
String size is 61"
Brace height is unknown but the string (Dacron-14 strand) will give you a brace-height range of 6" - 6 1/2".

What I don't know is if our bows are the same length, so the question that remains is this. Did they only make the #300 in one length?
