I didn't know there was an age limit! Care to explain / clarify / amplify?
Sympathy in any case.

Early 1980's increasing pain from right side of neck and down arm.
Osteopath did a fix (for a few months). Pain returned again Osteopath fixed
it. Tried acupuncture (useless). Tried normal medical (National Health
Service) X Rays show neck bones worn out. Tendons in neck arm inflamed. By
1989 pain got too much and I quit shooting for London in target archery.
Tried using a wheelie but they were too much.

So bow put away and apart from coaching some beginners I no longer have any
interest in competitive archery. Always interested in history though.
Archers world wide have all the same problems.

I don't know how old Johns is, but I don't shoot any more because of too many
arrows from 65-75 lb longbows. I have chronic bursitis in left shoulder. I
can draw any bow up to about 75 lb, just can't let it go. The recoil causes
intense pain.
I bought a compound, took it on one trip. Got back from the trip and sold
it. I'd rather not hunt.

Wow! Bummer. I had a rotator cuff problem that a manual therapist fixed
after many weeks of gentle (sometimes not too gentle) tugging and
re-alignment. Helped, I must say, by a specialist osteopath (and archer) who
answered my call for help on rec.sport.archery (or was it alt.archery? can't
remember)

It's nice to know that you still love the sport though.

Much sympathy

I've heard that before about HHill longbows. I've just retired a black
locust and bamboo bow that kicked a lot. But that was due to poor tiller.
Redistributing the bend towards the ends of the limbs, cutting off 1/2 inch
from the limb ends to restore weight, and then using a sheepskin grip (wool
inside) tamed it a lot.

OTOH, I have a pyramid bow that has zero handshock (and a lot of string
follow, which is why) and a yew longbow (also hand rolled) that thumps
rather than whacks, and has 3/8 inch string follow. There are ways to cut
down hand shock.

I find that my new Hill "Wesley Special" has virtually no kick with a
heavy arrow and then if I put one of my wife's much lighter arrows on
the shelf it has a nasty kick. You might try a heavier arrow.
