To the person who listed the books one would find in a library on ancient
Egypt, can you repost your article?

Thanks,
The Hab

Having had the good fortune to have access to the resources of the Oriental
Institute's Research Archives over the past several years, I feel qualified
to provide at least a partial list of basic reference books on various
aspects of ancient Egypt.

Compiling a list of all notable Egyptological references is a task which is
literally a full-time job. Nevertheless, it is still possible to list some
'essential' books which can be acquired relatively easily, as well as the
important reference books which one should be aware of.

I have had the opportunity in the past few years to teach a couple of
undergraduate classes on ancient Egypt, and I give the students a
Bibliography of just this type: i.e., those books which can be found easily in
new or used bookstores, along with the most important major reference works.

This list could easily be expanded to many times its length; there are dozens
of other perfectly good books which are not mentioned here, so their exclusion
does not reflect negatively on their merit. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

Call numbers in the LoC system are listed for some books; be aware that other
libraries may or may not use a different call number.

Your feedback is welcome; if you would like a more detailed description of any
of these books, I'd be happy to do so; if you think there is some book which
really should be included (or excluded) let me know.
