I just today purchased a "tire track eel".
The fish is awesome. When I asked the hack at the LFS (a chain store)
what it's primary diet was he mumbled and stumbled and said it "probably
eats other fish.....I guess". Thanks shmuck. I bought some rosie red
minnows and I believe he ate one out of the 12 (you can't count those
little darting suckers). I am going to buy some frozen bloodworms. If he
don't eat them my other carnivorious boys will.
Never seen this fish before. Any input would be great. I have pics but
no scientific name as that would be extremely helpful in my research.
E-mail me with your info. Thanx.

Out.

Well, Johsh, since this is a *very* standard fish, you should get a good
fish atlas.

Hi,
There is nothing special about the diet of your tyre-track eel, it will eat
the fish you put in for it, but in it's own time, fish are not it's primary
source of food. It should readily take the bloodworms and small/medium
sized earthworms etc.
As for scientific names, you could have either Mastacembelus armatus or M.
favus, or less likely, one of the other species grouped under "tyre-track
eel". Even the much smaller M. circumcinctus (banded spiny-eel) is often
referred to as such.
Any more questions?

Dave.

they tend to eat almost anything that looks like a worm.

I have two right now. They LOVE the live bloodworms that I feed them. I have
had three other besides these two and they were bloodworm fiends as well. Good
luck with him.

Hi,
I work in the pet retail for years and I think those little guys are awsome.
First they usually dont eat minnows. Your right , buy the bloodworms...and
anything that sinks they may like. Your flake food attracts them to come to the
top. Brine shrimp is an option also. frozen is also a good idea. They are
jumpers so watch your guy. they are expensive. The get BIG to!
good luck

I have a 4 1/2" one of these. It's my favourite fish. It eats when it wants
to. I feed f/d blood worm on a daily basis that the eel picks at. I also
feed a cube of dried tubiflex worm every other day. The tubiflex is the only
feed that the eel will compete for, when I stick it to the glass (providing
the eel is hungry) it will rip it to shreads until full. S/He lives in a
cave I made and as long as no one else goes in there (except the khulis) its
as peaceful as a guppy. When I feed live bloodworm the eel will spend all
day (concidering they are noctournal) looking through the sand for them. I
can also hand feed it.
Although I have tried, it is uninterested in the molly's fry (all sizes) and
doesn't bother any other fish in the tank (although there can be exceptions
to the rule).
Enjoy.

Family := Mastacembelidae
Sci Name := Mastacembelus Armatus (similar to Macrognathus Armatus)
Origin:= SE Asia

Hey..

Frozen or live bloodworm is the way to go with tire track or fire eels.
I can't remember the exact sci names but I know they're from the same
group. They will definately eat those bloodworms. They are night time
feeders though.

They have just got three big ones in my lfs. they are a lot darker than
mine, but are about 18+" in length. They look a little stunted though as
their width to length ratio is about 4x that of mine. They can grow to 28"!
Hope I have a big enough tank when it gets that big, this is one I don't
want to return when it gets too big.
