How long can Pleco stay in tank?

Okay, I'm pretty new to this aquarium thing... (running a 35gal
high/eclipse-2 setup) - I've been flipping a few fish atlases to get
somewhat familiar with what I have in my tank - you could say I
semi-inherited the whole setup.

Anyhow, I just realized I have a Pleco in the tank, which I understand grows
to gigantic proportions. At first I thought it was a catfish, since it
looked similar to the one I had in the tank. Well 6-7 weeks ago they were
roughly the same size, now the Pleco has about doubled in size - it's kind
of difficult to see how big it has gotten, since most of the time it is
inactive and likes to bury itself amongst the plants (the tank is heavily
planted). Right now it's around 4", as long as the red-fin shark I have in
there, but much more beefier.

Can someone tell me what its rate of growth is? How long before it outgrows
the confines of the tank? I didn't pay attention to it much before, since it
rarely moved around and seemed quite peaceable. Now I think it's outstripped
the angel fish to become the largest inhabitant of the tank.

It depends on what you mean by outgrowing the confines of the tank. I have a
friend with a 35-gallon tank containing a Pleco, which has gotten to be around
10 inches long. In that size tank, it probably will stop growing around ten
inches. According to my sources, the bare minimum aquarium size for a Pleco is
25 gallons. At one time, when I was just starting out, I kept a Pleco in a 10
gallon tank; it grew to around 5-6 inches and lived for over a year before I
gave it away. For anyone else who reads this, though, that was a mistake!
NEVER keep a Pleco in a 10-gallon tank. So, your tank should be able to
physically contain the Pleco although it will become a quite prominent
inhabitant, and the fish will get to seem very bulky.

But it is a catfish, since all plecos are catfishes! There is no
species or genus called just "catfish", but that word refers to a huge
order (?) of fish, Siluriformes. Catfishes come in all sizes: from
2-3 cm to several meters; in all shapes: from flat bottom dwellers to
free swimmers; in all diets: from strict vegetarian to carnivors.
They are found from all continents and from freshwater, brackish water
and full seawater.

Depends on how you keep it and which species it is. There are
hundreds of pleco species from 4-5" long bristlenoses (Ancistrus) to
about 2' long Liposarcus and Glyptoperichthys plecos.

>How long before it outgrows the confines of the tank?

As your tank is only 35 gal, I think it is best to remove the pleco
when it is about 6-7" long.

Isn't that the Creature from the Black Lagoon? :^)

I don't like the sound of my phone ringing so I put my phone inside my
fish tank. I can't hear it, but every time I get a call I see the fish
go like this <<<>>><<>><<<<. I go down to the pet store - 'Gimme
another ten guppies, I got a lotta calls yesterday.'" - Steven Wright

It depends upon how much food it gets and tank temperature.

you may want to just leave the pleco in the 35 gal. tank since he will probably
stop growing at a certain time. if he does get too big,, take him to a pet
store
