The hornwort I buy from my local shop, just seems to fall apart into
seperate pieces after a short while and I have to keep buying more. Has it
been engineered in some way to do this?

Is there any way to stop this disintegration ?

Ideally I would like to grow it and propogate it instead of buying it.
Grateful for any advice on how best to do this. Thanks.

If your water parameters are within reason criteria for it, it should
grow well all on its own. I continually toss clumps of it out or my
tank would be inundated with the stuff. I just toss a weighted clump
into the tank, and it will root itself, and grow. Clip off the top
weight a bunch of it and repeat process.
