I elected to use the SSA office in Birmingham, AL, instead of the
local office. The application was fairly straightforward and took
about 30 minutes to complete. I was a little surprised at the number
of questions asked, however, and wonder how some of them could be
relevant.

If the Birmingham office is afflicted with sloths like the Asheville
office, I'll be reporting back to you about next century as to the
results. I'll be sending them a copy of my SSN and a certified copy
of the record of my propitious birth. Although I don't remember it,
it was later reported to me that on my birthday the earth trembled,
goats and bears ran down from the mountains, and there were fiery
images in the heavens.

Anyway, I'll be letting you know how things work out. I have a feeling
this is going to make me rich. Gotta get it, you know, before Bush
and the neocoons steal it all.

Individual people in individual offices can act and react differently.
I went through this a while back without any complaint what so ever.
The agent was very professional and I don't recall any out of the
ordinary questions. I do recall that the exercise was carried out on
the 18th of the month and I elected to start payment the first of the
month previous to the that day and the following first of the month I
received a SS payment (12 days from the date of application). Thereafter
the payment date was adjusted to the day of the month my birth date
warrants.

Any way we can verify this? The lady at the local SS office told me
that when I applied in mid-October with a birthday making me 62
November 4, that I would not receive a check until sometime in January
2007.

Federal law applies same to everybody everywhere, don't it?

I have talked to other folks that went through this process and none had
any significant problems. A couple indicated the first payment was very
prompt as it was in my case. The SS Admin is completely electronic now,
so I don't see how they could provide different service to different
people in different areas.

I had made the appointment to start Medicare. Current law automatically
shifts private coverage to Medicare at 65. While I was there I elected
to take ss six months early (65 rather than 65 and 6 months). There was
only about $70 monthly difference and present value plus interest
calculations would extend the crossover point out to about twenty years.

Because I had not anticipated applying for SS that day I did not take my
military related documents and mailed those a few days later. I figured
that would delay the matter but it did not. The birth certificate
requirement would have delayed it.

I would suggest a polite phone call to one of the agents taking the
approach of "do payments sometimes start quicker than..." might be
worthwhile. It could be that the agents may not be aware how well their
system works. You will probably be pleasantly surprised.

How can you be signing up for Social Security? Helen and Seth and some of their
cronies say your DOB is 11-16-1954, and we know Helen and Seth have ever been
wrong about anything.

Larry, you're a fool. The SS folks are same as anybody else if you treat
them with an ounce of respect.
