Steamboat Bill, a.k.a. Mr. Cartoon was played by Jules Huffman on WSAZ
Channel 3 out of Huntington, WV.
Mr. Cartoon is still shown on Saturday Mornings since WSAZ is a NBC
affiliate and NBC now shows no network cartoons on Saturdays now (what a
bunch of pikers!). And Beeper is still on the show.
Huffman is supposed to be retiring from his news show duties, but I don't
know if he will still be doing Mr. Cartoon.

My mom once told me that Bob Brunner played the role of Beeper. Is
that still true or was it ever?

I'm from Ashland and I remember watching this show when I was younger.
Mr. Cartoon always read the dumbest jokes on that show. I was never a big
fan of everybody yelling "Roll 'em" before each cartoon.

I just stumbled across this group so coudl someone explain the Steamboat
Bill reference and how it ties into Ma. Cartoon.

I posted this to another subject, but thought I'd repeat:

As said earlier, Mr. Cartoon was Jules Huffman. A friend told me
that Beeper was sometimes played my his son, Marvin who I think
went on to be a drummer in some band like Jackyl (or some other
big haired band).

I know Bos & Dotty Johnson were the point/counterpoint couple (I
grew up with their son Rob.

I can't remember the weather woman for WSAZ, any help?

Wasn't it "DeeJay and the Weather"? Yes, it was pretty unscientific. :-)

A lot of us were remembering back to the 60's and what
local cartoon hosts there were. Mr. Cartoon was one of them
and another was Steamboat Bill. Steamboat Bill had a sea-monster
as a co-host.

Hey now...if you (like I) grew up in the listening area, did the weather
really matter? We were happy if the refinery or Armco didn't dump crap on the
car.

Dorothy Jean Schroeder (sp?), I believe.

That doesn't sound right...but then again it she always went by DJ.
Apparently she was no meteorologist, just a nice person to give the
weather which was usually 180 degrees out of whack. I never could
get over Mr. Cartoon (Jules) doing the weather when I was a kid.

It was Dorothy Jean Schroeder (sp?) according to my parents who
still live in Huntington.

Yeah, Steamboat Bill was the precursor of Mr. Cartoon. I think the
monster's name was Myrtle. When I was in Brownie Scouts, we toured the
WSAZ studios; I remember seeing the monster's head (costume part) sitting
on top of a file cabinet.

I also seem to recall that Steamboat Bill had another
side-kick/pal/whatever called "Miss Shell." Anyone else remember this?

OK. Peyton is here to help you guys remember. The sea monster's name
was Merlin. Steamboat Bill wasn't Jules Huffman but George Lewis, but
Lewis was a precursor to Mr. Cartoon.
Huffman is retiring sometime soon. He keeps putting it off. Now it's
supposed to be March I think. He's still doing Mr. Cartoon. Jules is in
his 70s but doesn't look it. WSAZ owns Mr. Cartoon so Huffman can't take
it with him. Theoretically, WSAZ could select another Mr, Cartoon,
though that is doubtful.
When I was in colelge, I was a news intern at Channel 3 and for a few
shows, I was one of the characters. Huffman used to have more than one.
THere were about three at one time.
Jules and I and John Marra, a common friend, had a cookout at
Marra's house near Culloden in the fall. We had a great time, primarily
because Marra is a winemaker and we drank lots of his homemade wine.
If i get a chance, I'm gong to call Huffman next week and tell him he
is th subject of a lot of talk on the Internet.
And on another topic: My pci of hot dogs is Stwearts, although I have
eaten my share of Frostop.
When I was in high school, I had a Stewarts Hot Dog Eating Contest
with a friend. I ate 11.5 and he ate 12. He won.

Oh well, I was close. Myrtle, Merlin. CRS syndrome, and all that.

When were you a news intern? I worked briefly (5 months) for WCHS in 1975,
in scheduling, then went on to work for WKAZ radio news for about 5 years.
Left there in 1980 to move to Maryland.

Dave, it takes a big man to admit he lost a Stewart's hot dog
eating contest.

Hey: I'm a big man :) Sad part of it was that I was a big man then
too and the guy who beat me was skinny.

DJ retired a few years ago due to health problems. If I remember
correctly (and I may be off-base here), she had to take extended sick
leave, and her replacement (a real meteorologist) was so much better at it
that WSAZ just kept him.

Last I heard, DJ had pretty much recovered. I guess she's just living the
retirement life now.

I always heard rumors that it was Bob Brunner in the Beeper suit.

You gotta hand it to Channel 3, in any case: they absolutely annihilate
the competition when it comes to the news.

I just found this Newsgroup, saw a reference to Mr. Cartoon and pulled it
up to read. I liked your comment (above) - I'm Bob Smith's
daughter-in-law in Indianapolis! :^)

I don't know about that, but Fred Briggs, of NBC News used to portray a
ghoulish character named "Gaylord" who hosted a Saturday night horror movie
series. The set was pretty cheesy: a basement like area with cobwebs, Briggs
was in a coffin that opened and he introduced the show, etc. Sort of a vintage
Elvira-type host.

WHTN-13, (now WOWK) had a competing kids show at the same time. I was on the
show one day and picked to introduce a cartoon. There was a cardboard and wood
structure with a handle that was pulled to start the cartoon, or Three Stooges
or whatever the feature happened to be. It wasn't as successful a show as Mr
Cartoon.
Both shows (including Steamboat Bill, etc) were all live.
I vaguely remember Steamboat Bill. Once he had a relative coming to visit
from out west who would "call" him letting him know of his progress and the
relative always asked, "How can you get to West Virginia by traveling east?"

I lived in Nitro and we couldn't get Channel 13 very well.
Reception was horrible. However, when I became a teenager ABC
had all the best shows such as American Bandstand, etc. so I
watched through all the snow. (grin)

George Lewis played Steamboat Bill and later changed the show to Mr. Cartoon. Huffman took over when Lewis took a job in Maryland on another kid oriented show called "Captain Chesapeake", where he became very successful too BTW. He later also hosted a kid show in Pittsburgh called Captain Pitt. Apparently Lewis loved the boat scenario but a change in ownership of WSAZ led to everything associated with the station prior to that to be scuttled (pun intended). That's when Lewis became Mr. Cartoon and took up residence in an abandoned country store. Huffman never played Steamboat Bill. It was 1969 before Lewis left WSAZ according to things I've found on the net but it seems like it was much earlier than that. Lewis was a big part of my childhood from the 50's until I was too old for cartoons and The Three Stooges (also a staple on the show) especially because he loved to mention my hometown of Argillite, Kentucky. Apparently he just liked the name and probably the community too which you pass through on the way to Greenbo Lake, which was extremely popular back in the 1960's. He must have mentioned Argillite at least 100 times.
