Cockfighting is just the beginning of the problems around Manchester.
I've been following the story a bit tho. They are saying the cop was
at the cockfight because he was looking for a fugitive.
It was only a few months ago that a bunch of the local government
officials were arrested by the FBI because of a long history of
running a vote buying operation.
I will be heading down there for a few days around Easter but I will
never live there again.

Hibbie, I know the area a little. I used to fly into London and
Middlesboro, and had friends in Corbin.
I always enjoyed flying into London, my first fuel stop on the way to
Oshkosh for the summer fly-in. Gotta do that thing again soon.
When we grew up the neighboring hills in Madison County were dotted
with gamecock cages. My dad never said anything about it from the
pulpit but he never approved. He wasn't so irked by the bloody
sufferings and deaths of the gamecocks as he was by the gambling and
the enjoyment of it, usually on the sabbath.
For me I always looked on it as a way to coarsen and harden people,
make them callous and inhumane. Some of the boys I grew up with who
became regular cockfighters met bad ends, two in a robbery in Newport,
TN (Del Rio), and one on the way to a cockfight in Kentucky. There
was drinking on the way, then a fight, then a knife came out, and an
old childhood friend was stabbed to death and another one sent to
prison for the rest of his life.
I don't know any of them that quit, and the premier cockfighter of the
area died not too long ago from liver cancer. The local preachers
said he made a deathbed profession of faith and "was saved." Yeah,
really, like the felon on his way to the penitentiary finding Jeezus
all of a sudden.
As a teenager I attended one cockfight in Del Rio. That was enough
for me. It was disgusting. The pit got so bloody, it hardened and
blackened from the bloody deaths of the dying roosters. I looked
around at the cheering crowd, and saw many children enjoying this
sadistic ritual. Men were always exchanging money, and the cash was
NOT dollar bills. I never saw so many glazed eyes gleefully watching
the killing. People who have never seen it don't realize the
gamecocks are fitted with razor-sharp gaffes which can kill with one
stroke.

I never attended a cockfight where there was gambling but I had a
couple of neighbors that would set their roosters at it just for the
"fun" of it. Sometimes dogs too. I never thought that much of it till
latter but I still didn't care for it much.
