Some of you may recall a sensational murder case that happened in
Morgantown back in 1970, where 2 WVU Coeds, Mared Malerik and Karen
Ferrell, disappeared while hitchhiking between campuses. Their
decapitated bodies were found several months later in a forest outside
of Weirton, WV. The killer was never found - maybe.

One individual by the name of Eugene Paul Clawson is currently serving
a life sentence in West Virginia's Mount Olive Prison after confessing
to the murders, but there are lingering doubts about whether he is the
real killer.

A now-retired West Virginia State Police Officer is still investigating
the case after 36 years.

There's an error in that story.

The headless bodies were found near Weirton Mine Road (old 4-H Camp road
which crosses Halleck Road about 8 miles south of Morgantown) - not Weirton,
WV, which is 90 miles from Morgantown in the northern panhandle, about 40
miles due west of Pittsburgh, PA.

You are correct. (It's been a while and I was a little hazy on the details
myself). I remember when that whole thing went down. I thought the remains
were found closer to Morgantown that what the article said.

Here's another interesting link on the subject.

I'm thinking about send this into A&E Channel's "Cold Case Files."

DNA matching is a real gift to society. Don't know if that is being looked
at here, but way out this away, they analyze DNA for all felons and match it
in a database and are solving cases that go back 40 years.

By the way, if anyone is wondering how this affects the statute of
limitations, folks need to understand that this statute was instituted not
to forgive criminals, but to allow law enforcement to drop old cases that
wer costing more and more as time goes on, and to spend their budgets on
more recent crimes that they had a better chance to solve. With DNA, there
is no statue in most cases.

I'm not aware of any state that has a statute of limitations on murder.

In almost every jurisdiction there is no statute of limitation for
murder. California may be an exception.

There's no statute of limitations on murder in California. At common
law there is no statute of limitations on a felony, but some states
have passed laws limiting actions on some felonies.

Go for it. Once in a great while an old one like this is solved.

preserve any DNA of the killer.
