The cool snap usually occurs simultaneously with the flowering of wild
blackberries, hence "black berry" winter. In some sections of Virginia it is
called "whippoorwill" winter. Haven't heard any other names for this particular
phenomenon It is sort of a winter counterpart to "Indian " summer.
