Hi, for my last year at the University of
Technology in Sydney, I am studying the formation
of online communities with another student. We are
using AOL as a good example of a large,
long-standing web community. Our research brief
and further information about our subject is
available at
http://www.eagles.bbs.net.au/~el/invis/index.htm
As part of our research, we would like people to
fill in this short survey. This is to gain some
empirical data and use it to compare to our
theoretical findings.
To fill in the survey, just hit "Reply to:" on
your browser and add in the answers to the
questions and any further comments you would like
to make.
Thanks for taking the time to fill this in. Rest
assured, this data goes no further than this
project.

1. Age:

2. Length of time using the Web:

3. Have you ever used AOL?(if no, please go to
Question 6)

4. What motivated you to choose AOL

5. Could you please describe your experiences
using AOL?

6. What experiences have you had with AOL users
while on the Web?

Thanks again!

As a one-time marker of dissertations, as well as remembering the pain of
assembling my own, I would question the objectivity of survey data gathered
from a source that (apparently) prides itself on its loathing of AOL
(unless, of course, you are going to collate an equal number of results from
alt.we-love-aol if such a place exists!)

Newsgroup signatures rarely have anything to do with the sender,
the post, or even the group. They exist merely as an opportunity
for the inadequate to impart some final witticism of mind-numbing
irrelevance. They are the ultimate triumph of form over function.

. Age:

2. Length of time using the Web:

3. Have you ever used AOL?(if no, please go to
Question 6) Yes, but I left (Thank God...)

4. What motivated you to choose AOL: I was really young and we had Wow, but
then they went borke and since I was about 8 I didn't know jack about the
Internet

5. Could you please describe your experiences

using AOL? Hated it. So many restrictions. If you don't believe me, go to
http://www.aolwatch.org or something like that. They're evil (AOL I mean)
and I'm glad I left.

6. What experiences have you had with AOL users

while on the Web? Most of them think they are 31337 h4><0rs, and the ones
that are decent all realize that AOL sucks and are dying to leave them and
get a real ISP.

Thanks again!

Thanks heaps everyone for your survey responses. AOL has arrived here in
Australia relitavely recently and the same problems you all have found have
been reported here (although VERY quietly!). The mainstream media here seems to
only praise AOL and cite their press releases so pity the poor sucker who gets
a disk with their new computers!

You do know that if they're being true to form ANYBODY who's media
gets it for free (what a bargain). Presumably they're buying a lot of
ads too.

America Online users, you don't have to tolerate AOLs poor
service. Try this:
