Hmmm .... not to get into any arguments or so, but KTR is a wandering
samurai series, apparently modeled after a number of 1960's Japanese
wandering samurai live action TV series. In this case, however, the two main
characters, a wandering samurai and a wandering martial arts expert, are
women. The series is lots of fun, with great animation, lots of action, lots
of humor and plotting that is right out of a late 50's or early 60's TV
Western. ( I've never seen the Japanese 1960's TV samurai shows, so that's
all I can compare it to. )
But is it shoujo? I can't remember if Wowow, the Japanese satellite TV
channel that broadcast KTR, mentioned that it was "original" or if it was
based upon a manga. But it's still a great series.

Thanks for your input!
Um... Dave, remember that one time a while ago when you
said that Mahou Tsukai Tai! TV was a cute mahou shoujo series
and some of us here um... strongly disagreed for the lack of
a better term?
::sigh::
At the time I was only familiar with the MTT OAVs (*very*
ecchi), but by now I've seen the TV sereis as well (still
kinda echhi, though better) and I still have problems
classifying it as shoujo. BUT! Last month I accidentally got my
hands on MTT manga, which was published by <...dramatic
pause...> Asuka DX.
So you were right, after all :)
I have to point out though that the art in manga is very
different from the art in anime, and manga is nowhere as
ecchi as anime, but a fact is a fact and has to be acknowledged.
I've seen it mentioned somewhere that there exists a shounen
version of MTT as well, but I wasn't able to find more info
on that. Maybe it's a crossover, just like Escaflowne...
It is. The first version, by Outa Tami, was the original, and as you
mention, it was published as a shoujo manga. It was also significantly
different in more than just the art---there's a whole sixth member of the
Magic Club who was dropped from the anime (Peter), and the plot had a
different focus (in the manga, the plot primarily revolved around Jeff and
his fellow wizards' imprisonment). The second version was done by Bandai
(via an imprint... can't recall the imprint name, though, gomen), and was an
"anime manga," i.e., based on the MTT anime (in this case, the TV series
rather than the OAVs). The second version isn't technically shounen---I
think it was a straight-to-tankoubon production, not serialized in any
particular magazine. But I'm not sure about that part.
Nora
That was purely by accident on my part - I don't read many mangas, so there
is no way for me to really catagorize anime on that basis. So nowadays I try
to refrain from using either of the "s-words" to catagorize anime. (L)

I raised a comment elsewhere ( I think ) that some of the "officially"
shoujo series like "Ayashi no Ceres" or "Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou" have a lot
more sex in them than most non-hentei shounen series. So I'm never certain
that the presence or absence of sex is a good indicator.

I still haven't seen the OAV version of MTT - too many shows to watch and
too little time. I've suddenly fallen behind again - "real life" keeps on
getting in the way of "reel life"... (L). So I don't have any idea if there
is a third version of MTT.

Just to clarify KareKano really only has Ecchiness in the form of Asaba and
even then it's...whacked.
There's not as much emphasis on sex in KK as there is in AnC. From watching 4
eps of it raw and picking up the artbook..it seems that AnC's plot revolves
around sex^^;;

It's not *that* severe. ^^;; ANC focuses on sexuality's affect on its
characters, but not in such a cheap, cop-out way as FY usually did.
Everything in ANC carries weight and delivers, which is why the sexual
overtones, undertones, and actualities didn't leave me as cold as FY's
sexuality did.

I made the mistake of showing my brother the ANC artbook when he paid me a
visit. I never thought anyone could get such a *wrong* impression about the
series. o.O

Ehehe. Can you imagine a real life Asaba? I don't know if my heart could take
that..Asaba's easily tied with Miyazawa for my favourite character out of the
whole bunch.
A real life Shibahime would just be SCARY.

Oh good. I only watched 4 eps and those were raw so I had a bit o trouble
following. I heard "The Heavens and the Earth" tho! I was so proud of myself
for naming it ^_^

See..I never got past volume 3 of FY so I don't really know just how ecchi it
got. I got disgusted with the whole "Tamahome!" "Miaka!" bit and decided to put
my money towards a better show.

Argh. I'm so pissed...I can't find AnC manga *or* translations ANYWHERE and now
I have to wait for "We'll take our sweet time" Viz to release it >< But at
least they should be quick when it comes to manga...the anime however...

Did you show him that 2 page spread with the really really..uh..interesting
picture? *trying to avoid spoilers* I wish I could read what it said on the
side. I only BOUGHT the artbook because I was at Otakon and after searching in
vain for the Angel Sanctuary artbook I decided to pick up that one to ease my
pain. Luckily for me the same place I got it from took that EXACT moment to
bring out brand spanking new copies of Angel Cage..so in a fit of impulse I
bought that AND the AnC artbook.
Now hopefully my friend John will get me the new Angel Sanctuary artbook thats
coming out this September..whoo.
Speaking of AS, Sarah you've read this right? How far have you gotten? Cause I
just finished book 5, have 6-10 coming in for my birthday in 17 days (whoo!)
and I'm having trouble find translations for Vol 10 and up.
Heheh. *kicks cdjapan* I want my AS OVAs!!! ;_;

I hope this helps!

Kare Kano is not Ecchi!!!!
I've seen the whole series and read all of the manga up to volume 9. It is
NOT H at all!!
Now, Kaikan Phrase is an ecchi shoujo manga. ^^

I agree 100% with you TnM. Kare Kano is driven by complex character
personalities, not sex. I don't understand how the series got plopped into
the H section in the sexual content classification.

I have.
And I *still* don't see how someone can say that the whole series is ecchi.
It has it's moments..but it is NOT driven by sex.

Of course it isn't a good indicator! It's the *kind* of sex ,
or rather the *way* sex was presented in MTT was wrong for
shoujo. There's a huge difference: panty shots (abundant in
MTT) usually go well together with shounen manga, and shirtless
bishounen (not enough in MTT! LOL!) belong in shoujo. Besides,
the male lead was made into some lecherous goofball of alsomst
Tenchi-sama's level of dumbness.
I have to admit : I just recently noticed that I've been using
a double standard speaking of ecchiness: looking up a girl's
skirt or at her boobs is 100% echhi, looking down a guy's shirt
or at his bum is... not so ecchi... it's cute!

Absolutely not! The sex there is not for the sole purpose
of titillating the readers, but a major means for plot/character
development.

It is

I think the presence of sex got confused with being "H" somewhere
along the way in the discussion.

How right you are.
Oh, man - do I *luv* Kaikan Phrase! I think Mayu Shinjo sticks
to "no chapter without a sex scene" rule to keep her readers happy.
Gosh, I wonder if it crosses the boundary into soft porn sometimes.
My only complain so far was about monotonicity - somebody should
explain to her that there exist more than one or two positions! LOL!
(Sorry! Couldn't help it! It IS pretty boring - though Aine did get
to tie Sakuya up once ... in tankoubun 8, I think...) Note that
I don't complain about monotonicity of the plot - I think that
one is hopleless.
Ochame
I love Karekano. I'm probably not as familiar with it as you are, but I can
say more or less for certain that each and every character strikes me as
being worthy of someone's list of favorites.

I love that song! ANC has one of the best OSTs I've heard.
Anyhow, the sex is definitely present in quantities that might bother some
(I know it bothers *me* sometimes), but it's not quite as painful as FY's
sex.

*sigh* The best parts of FY are so few and far between that sometimes I
question why I love it so much. It's a mediocre show with some oustanding
qualities. Unfortunately, the outstanding qualities are hard to spot.

I've got volumes one through eighteen. There aren't, from my experience, any
translations for beyond volume ten. This is devastating for me, because my
Japanese is so-so, boring on very bad.

The first four drama CDs are OOP. ~_~;; But some new ones for the next arc
are being created! As for the stationary set, if it's the one I think you're
talking about, let's just hope the pictures show up in the new artbook.
