Orig posted on the Gundam ML. By J. Boren

In a recent Newtype survey, 35 anime creators were asked to name the best
animated works of the 20th century. Yep, best anime of all time.
Here the rundown-
1 Mobile Suit Gundam
2 Yamato
3 Galaxy Express 999
4 Lupin III- The castle of Cagliostro
5 Future Boy Conan
6 Revolutionary Girl Utena (wow this ranked high!)
7 Ashita no Joe-2 (I think this is a boxing anime)
8 Heidi of the Alps
9 Ganba? (something) ...sorry I don't know this one
10 (tie) Triton of the sea(?)...I think I'm reading this right
and Neon Genesis Evangelion
Each creator (producer, chara designer, etc.) named their top 5 choices from
which the above list was created. About 20% of the entries comprised foreign
works, (Fantasia, Roger Rabbit, Fritz the Cat, Tom & Jerry, Wallace & Gromit
to name a few).

A few suprises-
Macross didn't make anyone's list.
Miyazaki's studio Gibli films got few votes. Totoro was absent.
Mononoke and Laputa got one vote each.
I didn't see Wings of Honemeasie (damnit, how do you spell that?)

I am personally surprised to see Gundam ranked the best, over far
technically superior films. It's cool though. I guess there's no
beating story, character, and Giant Robots. ^_^

While it rules, you also have to rememebr the creator of it went out of his
way to alienate people when they didn't understand what the hell was going in
the last two episodes of the show, from what I hear.

While I may not be of conventional anime wisdom I completely disagree with
this entire list.

> 1 Mobile Suit Gundam -Don't make me go into why I don't like this. I don't
know why but I don't like Amuro and how he is lauded as Gundam's hero. The
only true hero is Bernie of Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. If you haven't
seen 0080, you don't know what I am talking about... All others pale in
comparison to his virtue and sacrifice. No super-genocidal teenagers that
are invincible here. No masked morons with a royalty complex. No super-smart
Newtype who can build any Gundam simply uses his mental-abilities to save
everybody. Psychocommu? Give me a break. And Amuro didn't save Earth, Char
and all those other MS Pilots did when their combined thoughts moved the
asteroid in Char's Counter.

> 2 Yamato -Okay... yes some of you know this as Starblazers which I liked
as a kid but the notion of a WWII battleship retrofitted for space doesn't
get me excited.

> 3 Galaxy Express 999 -Girl with long blonde hair and that hat just scares
me. She looks homicidal.

> 4 Lupin III- The castle of Cagliostro - Fine, I agree with this. Lupin is
cool.

> 6 Revolutionary Girl Utena (wow this ranked high!) - I just can't stand
the character designs. I'm sorry.

> and Neon Genesis Evangelion - The most over-rated, overhyped piece of
garbage in the world...This isn't anime, this is a demented, sadistic,
suicidal arthouse movie from hell (although it took me awhile to understand
the signifigance of Shinji locking the door when comatose Asuka's blanket
fell off her top in hospital haha...accompanied by frenzied hand movements
and breathing).

WHERE THE @#$@# IS KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD? The best love
comedy/drama/fantasy/EVERYTHING anime ever... Where is Ranma? Where is
Macross? Where is Patlabor? --- And these are only the classics. I can tell
you that in recent years, some of the best animes I've ever seen have come
to light. Love Hina, Argent Soma, Hand Maid May, Ayashi No Ceres,
Jubei-Chan, Cowboy Beebop, etc...

Before I start rambling, all these thoughts probably mean didly squat because
with the exception of 3-4 of them...I've hardly seen any of the anime on this
top 10 list. You've also got to remember this is from a creators view point.
Creators tend to list what they consider revolutionary...these animes they
listed got these creators to think in different ways and make anime in
different ways. It wasn't about whether or not they liked them...these anime
changed their outlook on what anime should be like.

Since this list seems to only indicate what they felt were the most influential
japanese cartoons of the 20th century Mobile Suit Gundam indeed was highly
influencing the movement of anime in the 80s and certainly deserves the top
spot. Zeta Gundam was a dominant force in 85-86 while everyone else was
struggling to copy the Gundam formula. To a lesser degree, Macross does copy
this formula of real robot action though it of course has it's own niche in
anime with it's dramatic side. But...when it comes down to it, how many anime
series did Macross inspire? Gundam single handedly changed the entire Mecha
anime genre. Not to say that Macross is bad in any way, I love Macross as well
(Not Robotech, but Macorss) but when listing the best anime of the 20th
century...a list of such importance probably only includes the most
influential. Just think of how many 'copies' of Gundam there were in the 80s
like Dragonair, Dunbine (a Tomino work), even super robts started copying the
formula of mecha being just a tool rather than the over the top ultra bots of
the Mazinger era. Dancougar and probably like Gunbuster represents this
change. (it's also what probably killed the mecha anime genre for a while
there...these shows seemed to dissappear around 1990 I think).

Now then why isn't any of Go Nagai's creations or perhaps something even
earlier on the list? Perhaps because of legacy as well. Gundam spans 20 years
of anime, in those 20 years the franchise produced so many sequals it's hard
NOT to go back and find something good yet you can also turn on the TV (at
least in japan) and see something new from Gundam as well. The anime that made
the industry in the 50's-60's don't have that same legacy (Well Speed Racer
does have a fandom...it doesn't equal the sheer magnitude of Gundam fandom in
japan.)

Another reason Gundam would be considered the best of the 20th I believe is
it's impact on the japanese in the way of hobby. The HUGE model kit industry
in japan has in a way some thanks to give to the very early Gunpla models I
believe...the funny thing is, most viewers of any Gundam series will most
likely attempt to build one of the model kits. A good percentage of those soon
become collectors and builders.

Well anyway, my point is Gundam is very huge in japanese pop culture. Though
Macross has it's niche in the American side of things, it's nothing compared to
Gundam in japan. To add Macross to the list then is...a bit repetative since
they already listed Gundam (which in turn gave way to series like Macross).

Onto the rest of the list...I don't know what to think of it. Utena though
being strangely drawn is a visual treat though I don't know what was so
important about that series to make it one of the top ten (Maybe it was Utena's
symbolic stance of the placement of people in society or the strange visuals of
the show itself?). Evangelion isn't one of my favorites generally due to the
fact that it only captivates an audience until the end where it loses a LOT of
it's audience, and the movies don't make it any better. Good anime shouldn't
lose audience at the end, it should gather your attention from start to finish.
But Evangelion stands as a 'new age' sort of anime...I think that more and
more anime will try to delve into the mind numbing sort of deal that Eva
introduces.

For instance, things like Serial Experiments Lain are becomming a bit more
frequent in anime lately...and a lot of people attribute that to Eva. Though
honestly...Evangelion IMO is a tiny bit overrated because my personal
experience with the show is this...friends get into the show because they heard
it was a brain twister, but they watch it for the unique mecha design and
Rei/Asuka however. :P Generally they missed the entire point of the series and
it's symbolism and when the last two episodes show up they all seem to say to
themselves 'WTF!?'. Of course that's not always the case (I have some really
diehard friends of Eva ^^;) but a good amount of friends I know end up in this
category. In any case, within the coming years if more and more 'brain anime'
appear...this will probably all go back to Eva when the next of these lists are
created.

Patlabor probably is one of the best mecha shows of all time but this one also
falls into the category of 'follower' rather than 'revolutionary' (hmm...maybe
Utena made it cause of it's title?) I would think.
Love/Comedy sort of anime is problematic I think because of the fact that love
comedies in japan all seem to boil down to being the same all the time. If I
had to put one up there...it'd be a fight between Ranma and Urasei
Yatsura...but they're probably absent due to the fact that neither anime made
an impact on the industry and also the theme of love/comedy extends way before
the time of anime (well every type of theme and archtype had it's roots
elsewhere...just that this one cannot be represented by any one anime that
sticks out more or less than any other)

Of course Lupin is there, no doubt about that. Yamato? I never really did
like that show...Ashita no Joe, yup this one belongs here. Not many people
realize how many boxing/judo/karate/etc manga there are out there floating
around.

Oh well, there's my ultra long rant about the animes on this list...agree or
disagree...I think I myself missed a lot of points about why some of these
SHOULDN'T be here. :P

Err, a reference to Amuro here? Amuro wasn't genocidal, he was in fact very
reluctant about his position as the Gundam pilot and didn't take it too well.
Wasn't exactly a gung ho fighter. As for being invincible, well, there's some
merit to that but really, being under house arrest knocked him on his ass
pretty well. Maybe invincible in combat though... But thats a given.

> No masked morons with a royalty complex.

Char didn't have a royalty complex. His motives started out as revenge, and
eventually formed into an overzealous intention to teach the Earthnoids a
lesson.

Again, lets just shit on Amuro, right? Char was pretty intent on screwing over
earth, so I don't think his aid at stopping the asteroid was intentional. As
for all those other pilots, they wouldn't have done squat if Amuro hadn't gone
in there by himself first.

Seriously! NGE is not only my favorite anime series, it is my favorite
media anything! I love NGE. Everything about it is great... So many

I'm surprised Laputa didn't make it on the list too and these two made
it. Laputa is very close to Future Boy Conan...more developed as a
story in a lot of ways. Both are miyazaki's older anime...maybe they
like something more "classical"

This is hardly surprising. Considering NewType has traditionally been
heavily biased towards Gundam (consider their name) as well Kadokawa
heavily affiliated with Bandai and Sunrise. If the latter being Anaheim
Electronics the former would be AEUG. eg: As late as the early 1900s,
NewType has always placed Char's Counterattack as the best anime movie
of all time in their annual rating chart, beating out the likes of
Macross, and any of Miyazaki's stuffs.. even though there are quite a
few of us out there that doesn't think that highly of it.
