Does anyone know why Char leads Garma into an ambush? Is it to promote Garma as a martyr or
is it something that I just haven't seen yet? (I've seen the first part of the Gundam movies,
still waiting for the other two.)

Char has his reasons, and you'll find out more in the other two
movies.

The only thing "free" about so-called free time is that it doesn't cost
the boss anything. Free time is mostly devoted to getting ready for work,
going to work, returning from work, and recovering from work.

As far as I know, the Republic of Zeon was proclaimed in UC0058 by Zeon Zum
Daikun, Char Aznable's father (whose real name is Casval Rem Daikun). In
october UC0068, Zeon Daikun died under suspicious curcumstances. It was said
at that time that we was assasinated somehow by Degwin Sod Zabi, one of his
closest followers, but that was never confirmed, nor proven (cuz the Zabi
took care of any possible witnesses...). Later on, Zeon Daikun's children
(Casval and Altecia Som Daikun) were brought to Earth under the care of
Jimba Ral, who kept saying the Zabi killed their father. Char just lead
Garma into an ambush because this was his first step of his revenge on the
Zabi family.

Char is getting revenge for the death of father at the hands of the Zabi
family. Garma is the first of them.

Q:Which famous historical concept does Gundam W series try to show?
A:That poorly written anime series will still succeed if the robots
have a good enough toy deal.
