I'm currently working on an animated film, and need a good source of
sfx. I found a few good ones on findsounds.com but was wondering where
Spumco obtained its sound-library from. Spumco cartoons all seem to
have a very distinct set of sounds. Are they all samples in the public
domain?

We use the Hanna Barbera Sound Effects Library, and we also make a
lot of our own FX too. Hope this helps.

See ya

Actually, since we're on the topic, in addition to the Hanna Barbera
library, Sound Ideas also has the Warner Bros. cartoon sounds which I've
found very useful for many projects. You can even find the odd clip with
some very generic, yet very cool Mel Blanc voice clips. No words, but cool
screams and whatnot.

Good luck with your project, post it on the net and let us know when it's
done.

Thanks for the tip!

If you're in England, my film (along with others) will be playing in a
cinema in London on June 17th. I'll post it here too though

keep in mind, all of the above mentioned sound effects are copywrite
protected...meaning you need to pay licensing rights if you use it in a
commercial project.

Which ones? the Hanna-Barbera ones? So if I buy the Hanna Barbera CDs
for $500, I wouldn't be able to use them??

The licensing fee is sometimes included as a one-time fee when you buy the
package. That's something you have to work out with your sales rep.

By sales rep, I just mean the guy you talk to over the phone at Sound Ideas
or wherever. I can get you a number, but I won't post it over the group.

Steve said (2002)* that cartoon sound effects can not be copyrighted.
<Most of thsoe are form the old MGM, UPA, and ven Warner and Disney
libraries.

A lot of them originated on UPA's made-for-tv product!! (Esp.the ones
that JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, the latter 1965-66 FLINSTONES, and many
SCOOBY DOO's popularized, such as the famous juicy splat).

The BUNNNNGG metallic sound goes back to DIsney (c.1937).

(Probaly not on R&S but a "Wheeshweeshweesh" sound done about ten
times very fast in successionl, accompanied by timpani, is one of
Hanna Barbera's most famous and used sound effects when a
character--say, Fred or Wilma, spins out of control in their car or
Scooby Doo's revving his legs to run away with the meddling kids when
a spooky ghost comes out, and originated with 1930s Disney (LONESOME
GHOSTS) and Warners (around 1935-36).Originating on UPA was another
much used Hanna-Barbera sound effect, a gliding guitar note, folllowed
first by a LOUD simulatenous piano-keys pound, then a
dimaond-polishing sound, used for magical transformaitons in GULLIVER,
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO, SCOOBY, JOSIE, FUNKY PHANTOM, the various action
segments on BANANA SPLITS,and manh others)

Are you sure he didn't say you can't copyright a kind of sound effect?
Because sound recordings are specifically included in US copyright law,
altho the concept of "a boi-oi-oing sound" could not be copyrighted.
http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/102.html
Some of the older ones could easily have slipped into the public domain
as they would have been subject to registration requirements under the
older copyright law, but the Flintstone sound effects would have been
made after those requirements, as would most of the other cartoons.
