Early Usenet had alt.sex and over the years people kept making funny
subgroup names that no one intended to use. Remember, if you send the
newgroup command, alt.jazzy.king.nigger.dick will not only create that
group, but also alt.jazzy alt.jazzy.king and alt.jazzy.nigger :D
For sanity, new alt groups are supposed to be discussed in
alt.config. If you want to be a good user and not a luser do that.

Some newsgroups purge over time, yea. How much depends. If you're
using some El Cheapo Usenet provider, don't expect much before the
current month. If you're using a big one that serves as a backbone to
this particular InterNET then you probably have at least 10 to 15
years worth of posts.
Keep in mind that this is old school peer to peer. What happens is a
service chooses which newsgroups to host, downloads them ALL, then
uploads them to other sites, and its distributed like that. Only
archive sites like Deja have a complete record. Sadly, Deja got bought
out by Google in the early 2000's and is now the cancer known as
Google Groups which you can't even really search through.
Two books I recommend to aide you In your journey: "Managing UUCP and
Usenet" and "Using UUCP and Usenet" by O'Reilly and Associates. I have
the 1991 edition of Using UUCP and Usenet but I lost my copy of
"Managing".
Also be sure to read all the free resources available by old
denizens. Encyclopedia Dramatica actually has a couple of
entries. And as always, lurk before posting.
