Has anyone encountered their kitten or cat suckling themselves? Ruby is 4
months old and has of late discovered her own teats. She suckles on
herself and gets her tummy rather unattractively wet. Is this 'teathing'
and will it subside?

Thanks,

Heather

Yes I definately have. We used to have several cat friends who used to
visit us through an open window in our old house. One regular visitor
(who decided he wanted to live with us, even with great disuasion,)
called Nat used to suck on his own nipple regularly. he was about 2
years old! It used to happen after being stroked, he used to purr very
loudly but soon after that he would then start suckling on himself, and
nothing in the world would distract him from doing it! Cats will never
cease to amaze me!

Well at least that's slightly more socially accectable than what
my 3 year old Maui does when he first wakes up in the morning.
He's neutered, but that doesn't stop it for some reason. Let's
just say, my boyfriend wishes he could do the same thing to
himself. However, he has at least, stopped attacking his older
brother when he's feeling uhmmmmm, frisky.

Kisses,
Gillie

Hi.

My cat used to suckle on herself when she was a kitten. It drove me crazy,
especially when she did it while I was trying to sleep! She sleeps right
next to me. There is a product out there that is safe for cats and dogs.
It's called "Bitter Apple" and it's by Grannick's. You just spray a little
bit on their nipples and they won't suckle on them anymore. It will take a
couple weeks to get the cat out of the habit, but it does work! My cat
hasn't suckled on herself since! And it's absolutely safe for animals.

Hope this helps.

Crystal

My five month old kittens do this too - with a slight difference. The two
kittens are brothers and do it to each other, or usually one will do it to
the other, and one will do it to himself at the same time. I believe it is a
comfort behaviour. The breeder told me that they would grow out of it. She
also told me that she has seen it happen with a kitten and a stud male cat!

I have a male half-feral cat that lets kittens suckle on him. He's about 3 yrs
old and some of the kittens are about 1 yr old. Then there's the mother cat
that is nursing her 3 4-week olds. She also lets 3 other kittens from 2
different mother's nurse. They are about 3-5 months old.

And I thought it was just my boys that were perverted. I caught one of them
doing that to the_other_one recently. Takes brotherly love a bit far don't
you think?

And yes, I_am_trying to discourage it. Imagine if I had visitors!!!

Once they have seemed to have stopped, they'll probably start again as
soon as visitors arrive. :-)
