I just reciently adoped a miniture poodle with his tail cut off, I asked
the girl at the
vet's office "how come his tail is soo short" she said "it was cut of,
cause its a poodle thing" what does that mean? I have seen miniture
poodles with longer tails
and they look fine. This guy is the greatest pal that my wife and I
have ever had but
I can't understand why his tail was cut off. He is about 8 yr's old, a
little blind but sticks to me like glue ( his middle name now is elmer.)

Thanks folks,
Bill

Hello, do you mean to say he has no tail at all? He would have to be a
mutant to be born bob tail, I think. Poodles typically have tails docked at
age three days or so, to a length of 1/3 to one half of the natural length.
Perhaps your dog was docked by an eccentric breeder. It's an easy thing to
dock a puppy's tail and many weren't...aren't... one bit shy about
performing the surgery at home. It's not, as they say, rocket science. Of
course, you sometimes see these botched jobs.
Lots of dogs have accidents with their poor tails too. Horses step on
dog tails and dog tails have run-ins with autos. Tail accidents are hard
on a dog. It looks like it hurts a lot.
Hope your pup didn't suffer the accident. Bet the short tail makes your
pooch look even more like a lamb. :-)

Someone probably knew that poodles' tails are docked (cut shorter than
natural) but didn't know that they shouldn't be cut so short as a Rottie's
tail.

The tail is not completely gone but about 2 in. long. It sound like it was cut
off
because he was a poodle. I guess I don't understand that part. No he didn't
have an accident as far as I can tell. This little guy has had at least three
owners including
myself. The woman that owned him before we did was very sick and approaching
death, so her son was looking for a new home for him. As she said to us after
"I graduated from Hospice and came home." She came by and wanted to know if she
could have her dog back. Well we didn't exactly say NO but we would be very
unhappy if you took him back. She had two dog, both poodles, she kept the older
one and was going to take the one to the grave with her. Well she didn't go
and now has another little dog.

In the grand scheme, docking puppies tails at age three days, is
neither a vicious or malicious thing to do. You may disagree that a poodle
looks better with a third to half of his natural tail cut off, but our
energies might be better directed towards the way we humans nip and tuck
little human children.
I would never crop ears, but tail docking and dew claw removal is fine
with me. The tail thing is esthetic. In D.H. Laurence's _Fathers and
Sons_ a rustic character bites off the puppies tails. He could feel just
exactly where the vertebrae were with his tongue. Anyway, that's what he
said. This old uncle tells his young nephew something like, "The tails got
to come off so the dog won't be ashamed of himself when he's grown." Make
of this what you will.

Why should dogs have cropped ears or cut tails? Only because it is supposed
to be more beautiful? If nature wanted them to have hanging ears or long
tails why do humans always have to interfear? I come from Switzerland and
there these things are forbidden by law!
