Was exorcism fatal to teen?
Parents charged in youth's death

LONDON, Ont. -- The brother of a London teen killed in a bizarre religious
ritual said he is shocked his parents and another man have been charged with
first-degree murder.
But Diego Zepeda was "not shocked at all" to hear his mom and dad might have
strapped 19-year-old Walter Zepeda down for three days in an attempt to
exorcise "demons" out of him last weekend.
"That's what they believed ... he was possessed and they could get the evil
out of him by praying," he said. "I've seen it work."
Walter Zepeda, a strapping high school student, was found dead by paramedics
responding to a 911 call Tuesday night.
Police have charged Zepeda's parents, Diego Cordero and Ana Meija-Lopez, and
a friend, Alex Osegueda, with first-degree murder.
Police refused to say whether the killing occurred during a religious
ritual. But Diego Zepeda said yesterday, "that's exactly what was going on."
Autopsy results indicate Walter Zepeda died of dehydration. Police said he
spent his last three days strapped with neckties to chairs, allegedly while
his parents and visitors ignored his attempts to escape.
'HE WAS CONFUSED'
Pastor Guillermo Fabian of the Missionary Church of Christ said he had been
called to the family's apartment after Zepeda became delusional in a church
service a week earlier in Toronto.
"He was okay at first, talking about Jesus his saviour," said Fabian. "Then
he was confused, mixing up English and Spanish, talking very strange ... He
was talking crazy."
Neighbours at the family's London apartment complex said yesterday they
heard yelling and loud church music but did not call police.
"It's making us sick, just sick, now that we know what was happening," said
Diane Crozman, who lives in the unit above the one Zepeda died.
The Missionary Church of Christ in London has about 50 members, most of them
Salvadorans.
He said he does not practise faith healings but witnessed what he thinks was
an exorcism as a child in Montreal.
He explained the rituals as simply an extension of his parents very strong
faith as members of the Missionary Church of Christ.
"They look at life differently. My dad's answer to everything was always
based on God," he said.
"I don't remember ever going to a doctor -- never," said Diego Zepeda, who
is currently in custody at Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre on drug
trafficking charges.
"When I got sick as a kid, even if I had a fever or whatever, my dad would
just say we should pray for me to get better."
Scientologists were performing L. Ron Hubbard's
"Introspection Rundown" on her because she had became
psychotic and was talking "nonsense". (In the "Introspection
Rundown" the person having a "psychotic break" is isolated
with no one allowed to speak to them.)
They kept her tied and locked up for 17 days in a guarded
room in one of their churches until her horrible death from
dehydration.
I wonder if these religious fanatics will get away with
murder like the Scientologists did in the name of Freedom of
Religion?
