I can find a bunch of older laptops with Windows 10, but because of the
military, my son needs Windows 7. I went to Best Buy and a few other
places, and they want over $1,000. for a $300 computer, only because it has
to be Windows 7. WTF, Microsoft.

Any ideas?

I only need it for six months, so I would be happy to rent one, if I could
find one.

I should have a few around here, but I cannot find them.
I guess that is what the $700 is for, the OLD operating
system. I wish I would have bought a couple extra copies
back in the day for $200.

I saw this coming, and bought a Windows 7 Ultra disk on eBay cheap. I've
installed it on at least three computers with no problems.

Are you sure they M$ will let me do it with the half dozen copies
that I have already purchased over the years? How can I be sure
that it will work, and not get my son jailed? I'm serious, I need
advice, not pranks.

a piece of shit computer.

Do I just have to "bite the fuckin bullet"? OMG, I hate Bill Gates.

You were very smart to do this. When you posted your current desktop, I
wrote it down, but I didn't have the money to buy it then. I wish I would
have now.

I can get an awesome deal on a Lenovo small desktop, for cheap with Win7,
but it's just not what I need at the moment. I'm going to check out ebay, I
doubt I can trust them. . .

Google it. I've installed my copy on at least three computers and it
always works, but I bought an original retail version on eBay back when I
could see that Win 8 was a disaster. There are a lot of scammers selling
activation codes only on eBay, which they just get off of the label on
the side of an old computer, but you can still buy an original retail
version for around $100... not just somebody sending you an "activation
code" or a boot disk. You need to buy the original retail installation
disks to avoid any "problems".

Never said you were selling, so why all the drama

Freaking dinosaurs and your antique
operating systems. It's too laugh
because you're failing to adapt to
new technology and becoming further
and further behind the times.

Why not go all the way and install DOS!

It'll easily run on that POS Windows 10 that you think is so great... IF
I wanted it to. What possible benefit does Win 10 give you as far as
running the programs you use? It gives you a lot of desktop eye candy
through all the added bloatware, it spies on you constantly, and makes
the whole user experience more complicated and less intuitive than
Windows 7. What can it possibly do that would be an improvement over the
way I use my computer? If it doesn't provide me with any tangible
benefits, why would I possibly want to change from a system that has
served me well for years? Only an idiot would do that! The question you
should be asking yourself, is why was Microsoft so willing to give it
away for free?

Here's just one thing Win 10 does that Win 7
does not.

It can *play* .iso files. For example one can rip
a movie DVD and save it to the HDD as an .iso file.

Then one can left click on the saved .iso file and
there is a *Mount* option on the context menu. Click
on Mount and Windows 10 creates a virtual DVD drive
which can be used to play the virtual DVD with your
installed DVD player.

HTH

Also, if you're into music you can insert a music CD,
left click it and the context menu has the option to
rip, copy, burn, etc. so you don't even need extra
software.

I called Microsoft in the city, and they don't sell the disks, but told me
that if I brought in a brand new computer with the disk, they would install
it for $50. They told me the difference between OEM and Full Retail, but
most people on ebay don't know the difference. For example:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsoft-Windows-7-Ultimate-SKU-GLC-00182-Full-Retail-Box-32-bit-64-bit-SEALED-/253048593155?hash=item3aeadf1b03:g:KecAAOSwg6pZa5hE

At the top of the box it says upgrade, then in the description he says it's
for only one computer. The description says "Full Retail", which is
multiple computers.

This is a brand new and factory sealed package of Microsoft Windows 7
Ultimate with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. It is the full retail
version--NOT Academic, OEM, Not For Resale, Trial, Promotional, or Upgrade.
This is exactly what is sold in retail stores. The Microsoft SKU is
GLC-00182. *** This package is licensed for activation on 1 system. ***

Please Note: This listing is for 1 sealed package. The picture shows
multiple quantity because I want to show all sides of the package.
_________________________________________________________________________________

Just not sure what the difference is between stand alone full version, and
the upgrade version.

$130 is about as good as it gets, unless you want to take a chance on
eBay, and there are a lot of scammers selling software on eBay.
Sometimes, complete with malware. They usually have low feedback because
they're constantly changing to new accounts. Tiger Direct is a reputable
company. Consider the extra $30 cheap insurance. Yesterday you were
complaining that it was going to cost you an extra $800.

to my dismay, I find there may be good reasons* for the military's preference:

some, only some from the discussion of "Woebat" at market-ticker:

Kroyl

Do you apply the same treatment to Windows 10's Cortana (and telemetry
collection)? .... but it will send your interactions in the Start menu
(every search you do there, while you type), and will upload your
calendar info, apps your use most, etc, which can be a big deal.
Microsoft Edge will automatically sign you in if you use Microsoft
account, and you can see search history across devices (through Bing
Search). And with every update, Microsoft makes it harder to block the
data collection unless you use Win10 Enterprise in a domain.

There is no way to even buy Win10 Ent without signing a contract with
Microsoft (and paying for a minimum of 5 licenses, which must be renewed
yearly) - not an option for majority of home users. They now go out of
their way to bypass Hosts files, Windows Firewall rules, and registry
settings to prevent consumers from blocking *.vortex.data.microsoft.com
and similar services.

This year's Microsoft Build conference was heavily promoting their Azure
"AI" platform - the current push is adding "AI" capabilities to every
application, and feeding Cortana with data is one of the marketed
"benefits" of that (see Microsoft Cortana Intelligence Suite -
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-pl....). So, unless you keep using
outdated software, you will really have no way of opting out soon.

Oh that's not true..... (blocking it isn't all that hard at all... you do
need a firewall box in the middle though.) You can also shut off nearly
all of the telemetry in the first place (not all, but nearly all) but you
do need to edit the registry to do so.

lost the attribution:

out of date software will not necessarily help you avoid this as it is
very difficult to know what is contained in many of the updates to say
Windows 7. Additionally, the system is a black box. The code is not
subject to audit. The goal has always been for the PC and later tablets
(phones and pads) to be marketing and data collection vehicles. it is
really sad as Windows 10 is a major improvement in terms of memory and
resource management. I am just trying it now on a non-critical PC, very
nice in many regards. waiting to see if the updates change my privacy
settings.

We live in a world where people are being lulled into exchanging privacy
for convenience, and freedom for a perceived sense of security. As bad
as any of us are capable of conceiving it is, it's probably worse. The
Government is covertly collecting and storing numerous biometric markers
on more of its citizens every day. A camera pointed at a crowd can
automatically supply the identities of people in that crowd through
facial recognition. License plate scanners do essentially the same
thing. They can record characteristics of your "gait" when you're
walking, and analyze subtle behavioral tells to identify people who are
acting "nervously". They can take your temperature by infrared emissions
to tell if you're running a fever. They can even "see" through walls to
some extent, and with the advent of "The Internet of Things," some day
your toaster might even be spying on you. These programs were well
underway before most people had a clue, and that genie isn't going back
in the bottle... ever. Technology has become our master. Makes me glad
my ride on this planet is mostly over.

No. Since I create my very own .iso files and do
not download them, I have nothing to worry about
unless DVD Shrink 3.2 somehow is malware and installs
a virus of its own.

.Iso files are way too big for this sailor to
download anyway. It would burn up all my data
on my plan in a hurry.

I guess I need to get out of these idiot groups to figure out my problem.

Tried to roll back Windows 10 with Windows 7 dvd, doesn't want to
work. Microsoft told me to bring it to them to install the DVD for $50.

I guess that way they can do the reach around on my computer and

I was not aware of this, but I did catch Google spying on my for years on my
desktop. I would use Google search, and on the same browser sign into my
gmail account, so they knew all of my searches. I found out when I got a
tablet and had to sign up with google. Instead of getting a new account, I
put in my old gmail. When I opened Google and did a search, everything I
searched for for years was in the "cache", which I promptly deleted. I
don't use that for anything except surfing the web for news sites or
recipes.

Sad, but true.

I found one other way recently that our state capitol spies on our
smartphones. They pick up my devices everytime I even drive through the
parking lot, or even drive by, since you are almost on the building. I
don't think they wanted to news out. LOL

I was joking with a legislator that I needed to have a microwave in my
trunk, so I could turn off the devices and stick them in there so I cannot
be tracked. Apparently, they look on us as activists, or something. . .

When, from time to time, I visit a pron site or two,
I don't want it on my browsing history so I always
delete the browsing history for those dubious sites.
I don't really care if Google has my browsing history
for news sites, various searches, YouTube, etc.

But, it's just as easy to delete the entire browsing
history if that if one's preference.

How many partitions is on your Windows 7 desktop?

Do you know what a "partition" is?

Where do I use this tongue, you speak of?

I was going to say that I had used Ccleaner many times,
but it was still there. I had to make changes to my settings, but I doubt
it did much good.

I now use duckduckgo.com almost all the time, unless I need something in my
area, then I want the closest things first.

Don't download shit you don't want on your drive, but you can do a 7-pass
DoD class scrub on all "empty" space, as well as slack space on used
sectors, and then it's gone forever.

Yes I do, Femmett. I chose not to create any... except, of course, the
boot partition that Windows creates on installation. Are you using NTFS,
or FAT 32?

For getting to the places a man can be... a little "lickity split," in
your case.

FAT32 is old, like on my XP. I was assuming it was NTFS, but it might be
ReFS. I have 2 windows phones, and I can barely care to operate them with
8.1 and I believe one phone tricked me into updating to 10 like my tablet.

I tried booting it up with the cd. Then I went to system recovery and
clicked DVD, sounding like it was going to work and even gave me the old
screen, then aborted. Then I was so tired I just turned it off.

You recognize this, but still vote with conservatives instead of the
feminist left??

In the late 60s, early 70s, I thought I was a feminist. Then came abortion,
and I was against it. I'm not against prevention, of course.

Then the Unions screwed up America, and all of the grants and big government
regulations. I believe in the Constitution.

I believe in a free market, which Obama tried to toss in the University, I
know, because I was pissed an reported it to academia and the book
manufacturer in 2011.

I could go on why I vote like I do, but I do believe also that we should end
the drug war. If people want to kill themselves, let it clean the gene
pool.

I'm not gay, but I don't care what my neighbors do behind closed doors.
