Truth be told, San Miguel beer was the one thing -- and I stress, the *one*
thing -- that I actually liked about the Philippines. It may be a weakish beer,
but at US$.60 for a bottle, it's good enough for the occupationally depressed.
And it worked, too. I drank enough of that stuff to drown a buffalo, and I was
actually able to forget about that hell for as many as three or four hours at a
time in some cases.

While Bob's position sounds extreme, he does have a point
that rape is given far more importance than it deserves.
How many men would spend their lives crying if a woman

says more about women's frigidity and lack of respect
for men's sexuality than it does about the severity of the crime.

Sheez, Chumphries, I never cared where you crossposted your utterly dull tripe,
I just have no sympathy when you come back whining about netcops to solicit
others to join you in some sort of equally dull crusade. I still don't care.
And about flooding: Any idiot can flood a group with an abundance of white
noise -- you're an excellent example of this -- but it takes style and panache
to do it artistically. The latter is and will always be hopelessly beyond your
grasp.

I bet he'd be intesrested to read about what a good little netcop you
are:
1. Three or four unsuccessful complaints to Google Groups about
chuckles (about a year ago).
2. One successful complaint to Hotmail about chuckles (also about a
year ago, as a result of being emailed a virus).
3. One unsuccessful complaint to [I forget the ISP] about abusive
emails from a poster I'd rather not name, since the issue has been
resolved (about three or four months ago).
Someone got fired for posting smileys to UseNet.
Good Meow'ers such as Raoul and Doktor Pete joined in.
Faux Meow'ers (such as yourself) looked past the fact that some fuckhead
got a guy shitcanned from his job over UseNet postings.
*You* tried to turn it into a "Freedom to Snuh" campaign and helped kill
Meow in the process.
Bra-vo. Good work, Jeroen.

"Freedom to Snuh"? Strawman, my dear chap. I never said such thing. If I
recall correctly, I stated something along the lines of you abusing the concept
of free speech as an aegis for flooding. I have nothing against flooding per
se; I do have something against sniveling little cowards who lack the balls to
own up to what they do. If you flood, call it flooding, instead of trying to
pretend your actions served some higher good. If you just had the balls to
admit that, I'd respect you.

A fun group invasion? alt.peeves, summer of 2001. The invaders acted like
people instead of bots and quit when they had their fun. My brainchild; other
alt.flamers provided the additional muscle.

I don't recall saying those things to him. I told him he was unoriginal,
boring, and a fuckhead. And his history of TOS'd accounts suggests that he
has, sometimes, abused the Net.
Any idiot with a net connection and Windows 3.01 can do what Deano has
done. His claim to some level of "artistry" has always been the subject of
debate.
Well, it's not so much been a debate, it has amounted to Deano claiming
"art", and others laughing at him for doing so.

You sound as if you're vindicated or something. But you're missing the point.
The last thing I'm going to do is sit here and debate Good Vs. Evil with a
little whining putz who will only use any comments I make as an excuse to
continue his boring, tired ego-fuel crusade.
Why in the hell would I have to waste time "defending" a silly joke? Meow was,
and is, a silly joke. Nothing more. It was never a Movement, or a Crusade, or
ph14m3 gr00p, or an organization, or ANYFUCKINGTHING. The fact that you're
*still* -- this is what, a year and a half after I left? -- running around
Usenet like Bob Woodward on a bad batch of crank, hefting sheafs of papers that

If I may, I'll post what some old and beloved Meow'er once sent me:
===
o Riles up the PTA meetings and makes the uptight demand your departure.
o seperates the wheat (who either play ball or filter) from the chaff
(who whine and try to
regulate)
o is a controversial, disruptive, intentionally gimmicky way for people
to have fun needling the
boneheads
o quickly gets old, as far as the chaff (see above) are concerned,
inciting demagogues and rousing
rabble
o is either funny as hell to watch in action, funny as hell to
participate in, funny as hell to
flame and be flamed by its proponents and its gimmicks, or else it's
COMPLETELY FUCKING ABSENT, as
far as the wheat (see above) are concerned
o polarizes opinion
o pisses people off, intentionally and effectively, because it's *funny*
to see people get pissed
off when they can't do anything about it
o is awfully fucking hard to *ignore*
o gets the weenies at NANAU into another round of ineffectual,
redundant, rancorous and arrogant
conversation
o dominates, destroys, decorates, desecrates or directs practically
every thread in every fruop it
touches
o has unearthly stamina because it gains power from YOU
o protects freedom of expression by FUCKING USING IT
o involves the delibarate use of clever stupidity ((tm) 1997 The 2-Belo)
and inane pointlessness,
because THERE IS NO FUCKING POINT ((tm) 1997 The 2-Belo)
o The 2-Belo mheheheheh SPANK
o amazingly enough works, in conversation, as a convenient way to
identify your kind of person
o is practically perfect flamebait, and as such functions as a kind of
elaborate meta-troll and not
a bad one
o picks up where the last batch of funny, irreverent rowdies left off
when they stop being funny,
irreverent or rowdy
o makes the old-timers shake their heads
o makes the newbies wet the bed
o would make 'em proud in alt.fan.ok-soda
o is the secret, guilty pleasure of lurkers the world 'round
o really cranks up the post count
o gets called SPAM even though it isn't
o makes and breaks more net.friendships than just about anything
o gets into and out of more trouble than just about anything
o makes otherwise reasonable people get rabies and netcop
o has its demise predicted just about every twenty minutes
o is a great way to kill time, for yourself AND for others
o is harmless
o makes people claim to have been harmed
o is easily filtered
o isn't often filtered
o can't be muzzled
o makes people try to muzzle it
o gets your panties in a bunch, until and unless it unbunches your
panties (this only applies if you
wear panties, otherwise just use whatever you've got)
o involves the slight alteration of a catchphrase or buzzword in a
delightful contraption called a
'cascade'
Meow, or Snuh?

There's a bigger issue here, the point is being made extreme because
that's the only way most people listen.
Yesterday, people lost accounts (or in one case, a job) for posting
offtopic at AFU, today it's cascades, tomorrow it may be what's not
considered to be politically correct.
Obviously, UseNet is more than the just the US, and free speech isn't a
guarantee in many countries that have access to it, but I think it's
reasonable to expect that people should have to ability to post
whatever they want - uncensored. I think it speaks volumes about the
people that want to curtail the ability to speak without restriction,
usually people that can't control themselves, so they do the next best
thing and try to control others.
People that are running commercial servers have to remember that they
didn't start provisioning the news to make Bill Gate's dollars, the
major importance they serve is to enable people to speak their minds,
unedited by some stupid self-serving AUP/TOS, they do so much like a
teacher doesn't chose that field based on economics.
You have Stephen K. Gielda of Cotse.com, he understands and I will quote
from his open letter posted at his web site, it's about why he runs his
posting service:
===
Freedom of Speech is the foundation of a free society. Our country (USA)
was founded upon it. But it is under attack now. The problem is that the
only speech that needs protecting is unpopular speech. In order to
protect freedom of speech for all you must protect unpopular speech. If
you give away that freedom and censor, you'll have no recourse later if
someday it is your own speech that has become unpopular. But if you
support unpopular speech you will get attacked, and attacked viciously.
We believe in it enough to offer these services free with no revenue
return at all. It is our way of taking a stand. This may only be a tiny
stand, but freedom is being taken away in tiny pieces in the name of
protecting against unpopular speech. What is popular today will change
tomorrow, but the restrictions passed will stay. Freedom of speech must
not be forced out because someone does not like what someone else says.
This has been our stand against the eating away of that freedom.
Running Cotse is no picnic. It is a very large site and service,
administration is a 24x7 job. It means dealing with DoS attacks, hacking
attempts, complaints, and visits from the FBI. It means dealing with
harassment, threats, and personal attacks. It means 24x7 monitoring of
security lists and issues to fend off cracking attempts. It means not
spending time with my family, going on vacations, or away for the
weekend. No, it is definitely no picnic.
Why is it so difficult? Besides being a large reference site with a lot
of traffic and operating on a shoe-string (we like to call it
boot-strapping)? It is difficult only because we gave people the ability
to post to Usenet. Usenet is a battleground. It is global unmoderated
anarchy at it's finest where law is attempted through intimidation and
cyber attacks. If those don't work, the ante is raised to include real
life attacks.
We created the ability to post to help protect individuals from these
types of attacks. We shielded their IP address so they could not be
attacked for what they said. We have been very successful in this with a
user base of over 10,000 on our webmail service. Our service was
utilized during the Malaysian elections and the Yugoslavian conflict to
enable people to speak, and it has protected thousands of individuals
from real life attacks due to a disagreement in an on-line discussion.
But I'm battle scarred and shell shocked. It hasn't been an easy fight.
Those against us are not the governments, they are not the corporations,
they are not the legal system. They are individuals self-righteous in
their views. They are the very people who's freedom of speech we are
trying to protect. They have a right to be heard. But at the same time
they work hard to squelch any opposing opinions or speech, those others
also have a right to be heard. If they succeed, they will only have
given away their own freedom.
They don't seem to understand this, or if they do, they don't seem to
care. They forge our headers and commit net abuse to get support in
their war against us. They sign up for accounts and skirt the edges of
our policies to irritate others and build support against us. They have
one goal, shut us down or get me to shut it down because we shield
someone they want to attack. All because that person said something
unpopular or disagreed with their views.
I've been threatened, attacked, and harassed. We've had to change our
phone number due to 47 untraceable calls in a 24 hour period just to
call my wife nasty names. We've lost advertisers due to forged e-mail.
We've had attempted mails to our employers (fortunately we are our
employers and it's actually kind of amusing to get a message sent from
you to you to try to get you fired). Our family has gotten calls. This
is just what I know about, what I don't know is probably twice as much.
I've been forged all over usenet, been called every name in the book,
and have had my name forged to some of the bomb and death threats sent.
People have done everything they can to make my name mud. Recent
postings to alt.prisons have been made in an attempt to stir up attacks
on me and my family. Why? Because one of our users called someone
posting racist messages a racist name. The one who started the entire
racism stuff is now angry that he got called a name.
Why do I still do it? Everyone I know asks me that question. People
think I am nuts for putting up with everything. People think I should
just close it down. After all, it makes us no money, why bother?
These attacks we get are not because of illegal activity from our
services, that can be addressed legally. They are not from harassment
from our service, if they were we would be working with law enforcement.
These attacks are not from net abuse from our service, we worked hard
developing strict policies regarding abuse. Our policies were discussed
and adopted with help from the net-abuse groups and we continue to be an
active member in those groups.
No, these attacks are because someone said something unpopular or got
involved in a flamefest. They are because the attacker has no valid
legal recourse and no valid complaints of real abuse. These attacks
exist only to squelch an opposing viewpoint or to win a flamewar by
account term in an attempt to effect banishment from the Internet for
that opposing view. Everyone has a right to express their view, even if
it is found distasteful by others.
So on to the main question: Is it worth it? They are hoping that I
eventually decide no. I don't think I am going to do that.

Trolls often point out the absurdities in bad policy (BOMP, BOS, etc.)
and are the major part of causing more representative and reasonable
principles at Usenet. We are here to teach people that just because you
disagree with what a post may say, you need to learn to live with it and
develop tolerance, whether it's a smiley or offtopic post.

I waited a bit before I replied, and I can tell you it's just as bad as
ever and I can tell you that the people involved are only getting more
and more pissed off, so I don't see it getting any better soon.
In fact, I see it worsening.
> > I've always felt that this was not going to be pleasant.

No, not much time for me, I see all these posts where people are saying
that I'm posting as Folklore Unit, Adie, Zenwolf, Natasha, etc, it just
makes everyone feel that most here are even more stupid than originally
thought. Whatever happened, wasn't AFU infamous for doing proper
research?
We also laugh reading about all the guessing at what's *really* at work
here, and it couldn't more more simpler.
It's not about Kounas.
It's not about Simon.
It's not about smileys.
It *is* about having the freedom to post whatever you want, and you are
seeing an aggravated version of it.
Individuals that post non-commercial to UseNet can *not* be spammers,
and there's an attempt to link the hated *spammer* term to people that
fight for freedom of speech, this subject just was discussed and agreed
upon over at nanau and nana-p. Adims and UseNettians came to the
consensus that individuals that post in a non-commercial manner, even if
they have a high BI>, *should not* be TOS'ed off as breaking AUP for
spamming and/or have their posts canceled, at least that what the people
that participated felt.
It's yet another dirty trick that people who want to deny your freedom
use and it's what's being put to the test here at AFU.
> I like reading this newsgroup; I've learned a lot about what is true and

Groups can't die, they only exist virtually, interconnected with servers
around the world.
And we are here because of how much we love UseNet.
> However, it's nowhere near that point yet, this is just a fear of mine.
No, and I don't think that'll ever happen, if for no other reason out of
pure spite of the anal, embittered regs here, cause this seems to be the
UseNet capital for it.

You came here via Becca.
Her cause was trolling trolls, it became yours as well as you sat at

You tried to rewrite history and claimed Meow was all about "protecting

Heh. Rather rich coming from someone who has just posted a couple of long
posts, including quite a lot of Google research, at 4 in the morning.
Besides, I *like* telling people that I don't care.

Precisely. I never did have much patience for anyone who tried to use the
concept of freedom of speech as an aegis for flooding or net.abuse. And
trust me, Deano, I *have* abused the net and when I did, I felt no need to
justify my own behaviour with hypocritical prattle about 'freedom of
speech'. Why come up with a noble rationale when 'because I fucking can' is
so much better and so much more satisfying?
I guess *you* never did get it.
> Who died and left you the sole aribitter of what is and isn't flooding?
Why so defensive? I'm merely stating my opinion and you assume that I'm
imposing it on you. Do with it what you will, but if you insist on hanging
out in these parts, you'd do well to handle criticism a little better than
your usual frantic -- as stung by bees -- rationalisations and counter
accusations.
But we all know that debating isn't one of your pathetically small set of
fortes.

Actually, I thought the entire premise on which you based the accusation of
'outing' (such a stupid, over mined word) was surreal at best and utterly
ludicrous at worst. Naming someone's first name...
(Heh. When I first started posting as James McNamara, your precious Little
Toad went out of her way to let on that my name was Jeroen. I thought it
was kinda lame, but I also knew it was just Little Toad, so I didn't expect
anything better from her anyway. No harm done).

For the record, I never did any such thing. Truth be told, I never *netcopped*
anyone during my entire stint up to now as a Usenet poster, and I never asked
that anyone be netcopped for anything.
Baby Bladeface. Mark Bullock and I successfully negotiated a truce with FyRE to
stop the 'bot attack on the flame groups in exchange for a cessation of
cascading in alt.retribution, because it was getting out of hand, and getting
too serious.
I don't *like* when things get too serious.
Kehoe got serious. If she had, say, gone to Databasix where she *should* have
gone if she had a problem with the SIX FUCKING ARTICLES I crossposted to her
lousy group, then I wouldn't have even given it a second thought. It was the
fact that she unwittingly stumbled RIGHT INTO MY CLUTCHES and provided me with
a setup so PERFECT that I COULDN'T RESIST.... that drove me to action.
'Twas funny, too.
What have *you* done today, Deano?

It doesn't really make any fucking difference, and whatever "word" you heard is
irrelevant... but in the interest of fair play, I'll explain what happened.
Shortly after I outed the troll, the company I worked for went the way of so
many other computer companies of the time: straight to bankruptcy court. It
folded. Died. Went tits up. Foundered faster than the _Titanic_ in a glorious
display of computer graphics. The server I had been using to post all my
articles -- to this day, no sysadmin anywhere has classified any of my
Kehoe-related articles as net.abuse -- went back to its lease company.
I took a job with an industrial plant systems engineering firm. Got shafted,
sent to the Philippines without a net.connection or even a decent phone line
most of the time. In the tropical, insect-infested hell, I toiled, got chemical
burns, got slaked lime in my lungs... and was hardened to a fine edge.
I also was drained of any ability to take anything seriously ever again.
I told them all to go fuck themselves, came back home, and was accepted at my
current firm building web applications and administering seven or eight
database servers within three days of applying for it.
I am now quite a happy geek. And now I am back here, slamming your head against
my knee. Fancy that.
The story is all over my god damned web site, Dean. And every last word is
true. If you have evidence to the contrary, now's the time.
>If losing your job over UseNet was worth being "still celebrated in

I came back in the distant hope that I'd find a flame or two rattling around
this fucking looney bin.
Meow, or its reincarnation, is safely in another venue. Where that is, you can
only wish you fucking knew.
In other news...
>You were at your best when you wrote with your heart on your sleeve -
>it's no embarrassment to write with sincerity.
You're the last goddamned person I would accept compliments from. I'm sure
commercial airline pilots roll their eyes when smartass passengers, who don't
look as if they could even handle a Volkswagen, compliment them on their
landings.
But no matter.
I channeled the energy I used on the Webcenter (peace be upon it) into my new
site, a site having nothing to do with Usenet, where I can write real articles
that I can consider as having real merit. Might even be published one day, too.
I have alt.fan.karl-malden.nose, alt.flame, and aavf3 to thank for giving me
the practice.
