I heard that of course when I was a kid in the 60's and 70's.
But I also heard it when I was working at a hotel
as a porter up in Auckland.
An Italian man had a small fruit stall
in the middle of the hotel ourdoor mall area.
He used to sing sometimes during the day.
And that was one of his songs.

You are correct. Missouri is seriously lacking in cultural stimulus. The
St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is world class and the baseball Cardinals
usually rank pretty high in the standings. You would no doubt appreciate the
"Party Cove" at the Lake of the Ozarks where hundreds of boats gather on
summer weekends for two days of drunken, naked debauchery. It's sort of
like a trailer park on the water. But alas, the State is not going broke
and you can buy mansion like homes here for $500,000. The Rethugs have
taken over the legislature and one of our Senate seats, but that seems to
transition back and forth with enough regularity that neither sides does
much harm. Local schools are pretty much under local control and in
districts where the parents will pay reasonable property taxes and actually
give a damn, the schools are pretty good. So it's a decent enough place to
raise a family, don't know that I'll stay here now that I'm retired. But I
can certainly think of very few reasons to move to CA. My experience is
that outside of the San Francisco or San Diego, the negatives far outweigh
the positives and real estate prices in SF and SD remain illogical.

Our hillbillies are pretty well off. At least the ones who survive the
trailer explosions and rotten teeth. You see, Hags, they produce all that
meth that you Californians seem to enjoy in great quantity. We also grow
quite a bit of weed here in Missouri. Unfortunately the quality is not
high - more along the lines of that ditchweed that grows behind you trailer.
But it's good enough and in large enough quantity to make it it our largest
cash crop.
