Suspect receives 33-year prison sentence in woman's death

Associated Press

May 8, 2003
DANBURY, Conn. -- A Danbury man was sentenced to 33 years in prison Thursday
for strangling his ex-girlfriend and dumping her body in a drum he filled with
concrete.

Police said Daniel Archiere confessed to the Aug. 1, 2002, killing of
26-year-old Danielle Piazza. He told authorities that he and Piazza had a
history of domestic disputes and that they had been arguing more frequently
before he killed her in a car in Danbury.

Archiere, 29, told police that Piazza had tried to keep him from seeing their
4-year-old daughter.

On Thursday, Piazza's sister, Kristi Kallas, was too upset to read a statement
to Danbury Superior Court Judge Patrick L. Carroll III, the Republican-American
of Waterbury reported Friday. Victim's Advocate David Pond read it for her.

"You not only killed a daughter, but also a sister and a mother of two precious
children," Kallas wrote.

Archiere, who pleaded guilty to murder last month, defended himself.

"I'm kind, gentle and giving," he said. "I never meant for this to happen."

Piazza was last seen Aug. 1, when she and her daughter left the Waterbury
apartment she shared with her mother. She planned to go to Waterbury Superior
Court with Archiere, who had agreed to enroll in a family violence education
program.

Archiere returned to Piazza's home later that day, telling her mother he had
dropped her off at a Waterbury nail salon.

Police said after Archiere strangled Piazza, he dragged her into the woods
behind his friend Eric Revell's home in Danbury. He then took the child to
Waterbury.

Authorities believe he returned later with a barrel and concrete and packed
Piazza's body inside.

Revell, 22, pleaded guilty in March to hindering prosecution for helping
conceal Piazza's body. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

Archiere told Carroll he is the father of Piazza's 5-year-old daughter,
Rayleigh. The two families are seeking to adopt the girl, but court documents
say Archiere may not be her father, which is stalling the adoption.

The girl is in state custody.

"Rayleigh Irene Archiere is my daughter, no matter what any test says,"
Archiere shouted. "I'm her father forever."

Carroll said he considered voiding the plea deal because of Archiere's
comments.

"Everything about this case and what you've said in court today tells me you're
a coward," the judge told Archiere. "You killed this victim and then reported
her as a missing person. Then, you and others disposed of her in the most
callous and inhumane manner ever imaginable."

Yeah, it was just a little misstep in the dungeon.
