Apologies for being totally off-topic, but this is a mommy-crisis...

My kid has an art exam Monday. For this, they were asked what materials
they needed, and she asked for a stretched canvas. As she works out the
idea, however, she's finding she'd prefer to work in oil pastels, rather
than acrylic paint. (They're not really working in oils yet, owing to the
drying time required...and this exam has to be completed in one day.)

So: the question, to any of the artists in this ng...

Can you use oil pastels on canvas and get a decent result?

Many many thanks!

My Artist Handbook says this. pastels, is one of the oldest purest
way of painting.. and if the paper is the best and the pastels are the
best they can last for ever..
aka cave paintings..

Sooo why not let her experiment..
It may work and may not work..

All oil pastels are is.. the pigment and something to bind the pigment
together.. In watercolor water is used to get the pigment to paper..
if oil is used as in oil paint it is put to a cloth canvass or a
board..

So maybe it may work..

Thanks, Helen. She decided to work in acrylic after all, and seems pretty
happy with the results. I won't see it for weeks, though.

And thanks also to all who responded to this question for me!
