COLORADO SB 171 PROMOTES ABANDONMENT
Please write, fax, and call the Colorado State Senate to stall the
fast-track to pass SB 171, a bill that would legalize anonymous
abandonment at predetermined drop off centers. Baby Dump laws are
unproven quick fix solutions to the problem of infant abandonment.
SB 171:
* Rides roughshod over the identity rights of the abandoned child.
* Reverses a century long trend in child welfare policy discouraging
abandonment.
* Opens the door to potential fraud and abuse. Georgia Tann, convicted
Tennessee adoption black marketeer of the 1940's, would love this
bill.
* Directly conflicts with existing state and federal legislation and
U.S. Supreme Court decisions, such as birthmother revocation
periods, birthfather notification, and the Indian Child Welfare Act.
* Ignores the causes of infant abandonment and the needs of mothers in
crisis; no counseling provided pre- or post-abandonment for
abandoning mothers.
Colorado legislators need to know that Baby Dump laws DON'T WORK!
Texas mothers continue to abandon babies outside of their Baby Dump
system.
