Aviation Victims Look To Obama For Justice!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
As Bill Sees It (Editorial): Will President Obama Listen To Aviation's
Victims? That will be the question in millions of people whose health and
quality of life is impacted every day by aviation noise, air and water
pollution. I not only voted for Obama, I contributed to his campaign. I did
so because I thought that Obama would be more likely (and so far still do)
to listen to the victims of aviation than McCain would. But as the past
record has shown that democrats have pushed aviation expansion as much, if
not more, than the republicans. I am very wary that "stimulus" money will be
used for airport construction and expansion with the usual excuse that this
will create "jobs;" ignoring the environmental impacts. If Obama thinks that
aviation victims are going to stand for another four years of having the
health impacts of round-the-clock aviation noise on residential communities
being hidden and/or ignored by the American government, he may be surprised
by the backlash from the victimized communities!!!
British Youtube Video Shows Aircraft Noise Impact On Children!!! Once again
the English have led the way in the fight to stop the increasing health
impacts from airport expansion. Produced by the Enoughsenoughs.org, a group
that is concerned mainly with world climate change as well as associated
issues, this video (on the right) shows children trying to talk about what
they want to be when they grow up while big jets scream over their heads.
This is a extremely effective video that clearly demonstrates the kind of
environment that the aviation industry has inflicted on the most helpless of
humans, children.
Congressmen Travel FIRST CLASS On Taxpayer Dime!!! ABC did a news story
about the congressmen who were so vocal criticizing the car industry CEOs
who took corporate jets to testify why they needed taxpayer money to bailout
their industries. It seems when it comes to traveling by air the CEO's have
some competition from their congressional critics. Of course they only
travel first class while most of their bosses, the taxpayers, can only
afford to ride coach.
Buffalo, New York Crash: Media Keeps The Lid On Aviation Hazard
Statistics!!! While listening to the coverage of the Flight 3407 Buffalo,
New York crash I heard one reporter mention that the model of the plane that
crashed was "five times more likely to crash" than a large airliner. I
thought I would check on that statement and found a web site that gave
statistics on the dangers of different "types" of flying. As I think Flight
2407 would be considered a "commuter" plane, the fatality rate of flying
(according to NTSB statistics) would be approximately three times more
dangerous than flying in a larger jetliner. That still is a startling
statistic and one that the media seems to be carefully avoiding. Another
interesting statistic carefully avoided by the media is the danger of flying
in a small, general aviation plane. According to the NTSB, flying in a small
plane is more than five times as dangerous as flying in a airliner!!!
Another interesting web site showing "fatalities per millions hours" of use
indicates that there is almost DOUBLE the risk of death flying in a small
plane compared to riding a motorcycle!!! I wonder if that number includes
the people killed in their homes?
Obama Gets His Presidential Noise Free Zone: This Tempory Flight Restricted
(TFR) zone moves to wherever the president goes. The purpose is allegedly to
keep a terrorist from crashing a plane into a home where the president is
staying. As I wonder if the Secret Service would actually shoot down a plane
that accidentally flew over where the president is staying (I never heard of
it happening) I think the actual reason is an effort by the aviation
industry and their FAA partners-in-crime to prevent the president from being
annoyed by aviation noise. Who knows, if that happened, the president might
start thinking round the clock flights over residential communities is a
criminal act.

Congress Travels Free on Taxpayers' Dime!!! There's been no shortage of
outrage in Congress about CEOs and their corporate jets, but members of
Congress know something about luxury travel, too. Congressmen regularly
travel the world on the taxpayers' dime -- as members of so-called
congressional delegations, or "CoDels." A bipartisan group of members of
Congress and their spouses went on an official trip to Europe this week,
traveling through Brussels, Vienna, Paris -- where they spent Valentine's
Day -- and the Bavarian Alps. As is the case with almost all of these
congressional trips, they were able to avoid annoying airport lines,
frustrating flight delays and baggage nightmares, because they were flown at
no cost to them by the Air Force. Commercial airfare for a comparable trip
across Europe would cost roughly $10,000 per person. A good deal on a
private charter flight for a trip like this would be at least $200,000. ABC
News caught up with Rep. John Tanner, D-Tenn., who is leading the
delegation, shortly before he left for the trip. Tanner strongly defended
the group's travels, saying he has important meetings at each stop and the
trip is part of a greater effort to improve relations with Europe. Tanner
isn't the only frequent flier in Congress. Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y.
(picture on the right), has taken four taxpayer-financed trips to nine
countries over the past four years, despite criticizing corporate executives
for flying on private jets to Washington and asking for taxpayer handouts.

13-town Alliance for Sensible Airspace Planning "Pleased" With Response To
Brief!!! Area towns are encouraged by the Federal Aviation Administration's
latest response to a lawsuit challenging the FAA's airspace redesign plan
for New York City airports. The FAA plans to redirect planes descending to
LaGuardia Airport over southern Fairfield County and areas of New York at
peak travel times. Communities that will be impacted have objected largely
on the basis of noise, safety, air quality, and other environmental impacts.
The 13-town Alliance for Sensible Airspace Planning, which includes Redding
and many other Fairfield County towns, joined with groups in New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, Rockland County, N.Y., and the state of Connecticut in filing
a lawsuit against the FAA. The FAA issued its response to the latest brief
filed in the suit. "We're very pleased with the brief from the FAA, because
it has helped establish that many legal points we've raised are valid and
worth pursuing," said Weston First Selectman Woody Bliss, who is also the
co-vice chairman of the airspace alliance. "Our partners in Fairfield County
have worked very well together to raise consciousness of the airspace
redesign plan, which will have such adverse effects on all citizens." The
executive committee of the alliance has held 24 meetings in the last 18
months, Mr. Bliss said. Towns in the alliance have agreed to split costs
associated with filing the lawsuit, acquiring lobbyists and beginning a
grass-roots organization. Redding's portion, which was approved by town
officials, totals about $59,609. "We have decided not to go back to the
towns for more money," Mr. Bliss said. The money already contributed - a
total of $1,012,412 - should be sufficient, especially since there are also
successful private fund-raising efforts underway, he said, The alliance has
until March 6 to respond to the FAA's response.

President Obama's Noise Free Zone: President Barack Obama will be returning
to Chicago for the first time since being sworn in as president and that
means pilots flying in the area will have to be aware of new flight
restrictions impacting one of the nation's busiest chunks of airspace. Obama
is expected to go to Chicago several times each year, so pilots should
become familiar with the airspace restrictions in order to keep themselves
out of trouble. His first visit is scheduled from 4:30 p.m. local on Friday,
Feb. 13, through 10 a.m. local on Monday, Feb. 16. The FAA already has
established a 30-nautical-mile-radius temporary flight restriction (TFR) for
this weekend, encompassing much of the Chicago Class B airspace and shutting
off part of the shoreline along the southwestern edge of Lake Michigan. The
TFR has an inner 10-nm-radius GA no-fly zone, which will affect general
aviation flights arriving and departing Chicago Midway International
Airport. Another 10-nm-radius TFR will be centered over Chicago O'Hare
International for the president's arrival. AOPA anticipates that the FAA
also will issue a TFR for his departure.
