Quote of the Week: " I think the scale and range of civil society which is
opposing the expansion of Heathrow is absolutely unique and historic"

"Flash Mob" Tactic Used Against Heathrow Expansion!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
As Bill Sees It (Editorial): More Aviation Destruction Of Nature? As if
increasing global warming with toxic emissions, health damaging
round-the-clock noise and filling the skies with unnatural white streaks
instead of clouds wasn't enough the Aviation Cabal now wants to institute a
massive bird eradication program to make the skies safer for polluting
planes!!! It's interesting how the politicians and newspapers (which get
airline industry advertising) worry so much about the safety of the flying
public when it comes to bird collisions with planes but don't give a damn
about thehealth impacts from round-the-clock noise from these same planes.
Even though I would much rather hear the sounds of the honking of flocks of
geese to the road of a polluting jetliner, I care about the safety of planes
from bird strikes. Although I avoid flying I do have friends and family that
do. However, as a person who is working to restore the balance of nature
that aviation expansion "progress" has destroyed, I am very much against the
easy and nasty solution of destroying the flocks of geese that are still
recovering to their former numbers. By the way, the species of birds that
struck the A320 plane has not yet been determined. As of this writing it is
thought to be Snow Geese as the collision happened at 3,000 feet, which is
too high for lower flying Canada Geese.
Make Tougher Planes, Stop The Wildlife Destruction!!! Let the aviation
polluters make their plane engines better able to withstand bird collisions.
When I lived in Rockaway, N.Y. City I fought against the Port Authority and
FAA destroying a colony of Laughing Gulls located in a bird nesting area at
the end of a JFK Airport runway. I agreed that it was dangerous to fly over
a "protected" bird nesting area but instead of destroying the birds, a
better solution would be to have moved the runway so it went over the water
in Jamaica Bay as it was when the airport first opened. They refused, and
shortly after that the ill-fated Flight 800 took off over the bird nesting
area and shortly crashed killing 230 people. The cause of which has never
been definitely determined (although the NTSB says it was "probably" from a
fuel tank explosion). This dangerous situation continues and the blood of
the next plane crash victims (including those on the ground) will be on
their hands.
British Government Decision On Heathrow Runway Galvanizes Environmental
Groups!!! One good thing about the British government's decision to build a
third Heathrow runway is that it has got various environmental groups to
unite in opposition to it. This new upsurge in opposition has been
described by some newspapers as being as large as the Suffragette Movement.
I have to take my hat off to the British environmentalists for their
creative and "civilized" demonstrations against the barbaric plans of own
government to expand Heathrow. Anti-aviation pollution expansionists around
the world should look to them as the leaders in the struggle against the
international aviation conspiracy (I think I just coined a new phrase). I
like their latest "flash mob" tactic which notifies people on a email list
of demonstration. Check out their recent flash mob announcement, featuring a
picture of transportation minister Geoff Hoon (pictured on the left). On
their web site they say they are in the anti-Heathrow expansion fight for
the long haul...so am I. I almost feel sorry for the British politicians who
are pushing this expansion atrocity down the throats of their own fellow
citizens...almost, but not quite.

British Environmentalists Unite Against Heathrow's Third Runway!!! Hundreds
of activists opposed to a third runway at Heathrow staged a "flash mob"
protest at Terminal 5 today in what is the first major demonstration since
the Government gave the go-ahead for the expansion on Thursday.
Environmentalists gathered with local residents and climate change groups in
a show of solidarity and support for the village of Sipson, which faces
demolition when the £9bn project commences. More than 2,000 people will lose
their homes and thousands more will be forced to live within a few hundred
yards of the new third runway. Campaigners, wearing red t-shirts emblazoned
with the words 'Stop Airport Expansion', said they were ready to move into
homes facing destruction.

New York: Flight 1549 Had Experienced Engine Problems Two Days Before
Crash!!! Although Capt. Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger was able to
masterfully land US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River last week,
delivering all 155 passengers safely back to land with only minimal personal
injuries reported, airplane accident lawsuits could still end up being filed
by some passengers after the investigation into the cause of the crash
landing is complete. The accident occurred on January 15, 2009, after both
of the plane's engines failed shortly after takeoff from New York City's La
Guardia Airport, while it was en route to North Carolina's Charlotte Douglas
(International) Airport. The investigation into the airplane accident is
still continuing, but all indications suggest that a flock of large birds
took out the engines. The National transportation Safety Board has
discovered feathers and other evidence of bird strikes from the plane's
wings, engine and fuselage. According to a report by the Associated Press
earlier this week, a number of US Airways accident lawsuits could still be
filed by passengers who suffered mainly minimal injuries in the crash and
subsequent rescue from the freezing water of the Hudson River. Mechanical
failure or defect has not been ruled out as a possible contributing factor
for both engines going out at the same time. Reports suggest that the same
airplane experienced engine problems just two days before the crash, when a
compressor stalled.

GEESE BE GONE New York Post January 17, 2009
It's time to kill the geese.
It's especially time to kill those geese most likely to wreck another jet
airliner, much as a gaggle of Canada geese seems to have brought down US
Airways Flight 1549 Thursday.
This time, all 155 passengers and crew were lifted from the icy Hudson
River - an extraordinarily exceptional outcome.
Next time? Who knows.
Canada geese are a serious threat to human life and property - not to
mention a major pain to pedestrians, motorists and folks who just like to
spread a picnic blanket in a park.
Obviously, the official cause of the crash won't be declared for a while.
But nobody doubts that it was what pilots call a "bird strike" - just as
nobody doubts that the guilty birds were Canada geese.
That's because Canada geese are everywhere - and they're out of control.
Every year, more than 10,000 US planes collide with birds, and geese are
among the most deadly: They're big, and they fly in flocks.
Planes into and out of JFK Airport experience an average of more than one
bird strike a day, says Steven Garber, a former director of wildlife
management at Port Authority airports.
LaGuardia, says Garber, where Flight 1549 originated, is an absolute "death
trap." He himself avoids using it.
Nationwide, damage runs to more than $600 million a year. Since 1988, at
least 219 people have died worldwide, thanks to these wholly avoidable
collisions.
Geese appear to have been sucked into Flight 1549's engines, causing a
stall-out that forced the pilot to make a spectacular emergency landing in
the Hudson.
But if ever there was an easily avoidable accident, this was it.
Garber says it's simple to get rid of the geese, if the authorities really
want to - you can catch them and kill them.
Ah, but tough federal and state laws get in the way.
True, "wildlife management plans" are meant to address the problem at
airports. But the rules can be loosened further. And those responsible for
carrying them out can do a far better job.
Beyond airport vicinities, it's even harder to tamper with geese (let alone
kill them) - even as they coat parks and playgrounds everywhere in layers of
disgusting goose poop.
This is unsightly, unsanitary - and totally unacceptable.
Something needs to be done.
Imagine if the US Airways plane had come down just a few hundred yards
farther north - crashing into the George Washington Bridge and taking out
the Interstate-95 economic corridor for who knows how long.
The death and physical destruction would have been catastrophic - and the
economic fallout could have been almost as bad: There are more than 107
million vehicle crossings of the span annually, including 16 million trucks.
What's to be done?
Yesterday, aides to Mayor Bloomberg, Gov. Paterson and Sen. Chuck Schumer
had nothing much to say.
Fine. Only 24 hours had passed since the near-tragedy.
Not so fine if they're not energized to do something about this problem
soon.
The airport geese need to be gone - and there's no time to lose.
