Wed. Jan. 27th

All friends,
Local human rights and environmental advocates here in Olympia
took the multinational oil corporation Shell to task on Monday,
January 25th, for it's criminal record of violence in the Niger delta
region of Nigeria.
Four protesters positioned themselves on top of the gas pumping
island at the Black Lake Shell station and draped banners over the
sides while a streetside placard-waving crowd of about 30 or 40 passed
out leaflets. The climbers lasted up on the canopy for about an hour
before state-sanctioned gang members wearing black uniforms and
carrying firearms, aided by
a firetruck, convinced them to walk down and get tickets for criminal
trespass rather then spend the night caged in the Olympia jail. If
they had been in Nigeria they quite possibly would be dead, and the
CEO's at Shell would be toasting their murderers.
The goal of compelling the local Gannett-owned Olympian newspaper
to cover the story (with color photograph) was accomplished, and given
their previous record, we are pleasantly surprised at the relative
quality of coverage. We have also been given front page coverage in
the excellent local paper Works In Progress, and are working on
reports for the IWW national paper (the four gas pump climbers are
Wobblies) and hope to get something in the Earth First! Journal, which
has previously published several articles on oil exploitation in the
delta. We are also planning on sending the Olympian article to Shell
and Chevron, and to representatives of the Niger delta peoples in
exile in this country. In any event, many more people around here are
now aware of the situation in Nigeria.
We will gladly fax or e-mail pictures and/or articles to anyone who
wants to use them, presumably as part of stories that include in some
way the global resistance (reply to this e-mail address).
Also, if you live in this area, the four criminal trespassers were
interviewed for tctv (channel 3 on cable) on Tuesday night. The
segment will air this Friday at 7 or 8pm.
Thanks to Media Island International.

NIGERIA IS AS CLOSE AS YOUR GAS PUMP.
All power to the imagination!
