Hello my name is Leanne and I am trying to get some information about
talent agents for my daughters I have three girls that range in age from 8
almost 9 years old a 6 year old and a 3 year old and I am interested in
getting them into acting. But I have know experience in doing any of this. I
am wondering what is the best kind of photos for the children to have are
head shots better then full body shots and how to you go along with sending
them in do you need a cover sheet for the children with information about
them and what kind of information is important to agents. Also if you could
give me some names of agents in IL. One more question if someone is
interested in any of my daughters for acting should I get a lawyer to help
me with looking over papers if they get any deals?

Headshots are fine for children, but you can also include a full shot on a
comp card, which are becoming more popular. The headshot is a single 8 x 10
of the face. Comp cards have several photos including a close-up of the
face, with different looks, in either 3/4 frame or full frame. 3/4 frame
cuts off just above the knee. Full frame includes the entire body.

Casting directors just need name, age range within a few years (example,
3-5, 7-9, etc) height, weight, hair color, eye color.
Include a "Special Skills" section. This is where you list all the cool
things your child can do. Bicycle, skateboard, skiing, baseball, volley,
swimming, horseback riding,
Include any work experience in reverse chronological order, the most recent
job first. If your child has no experience, don't worry, we all had no
experience at one time, but if they were in the school play, list it. List
anything that counts as acting.
You can use a professional photographer, but it is often not necessary, and
you can take your own photos, especially if you have several children, do
not spend a lot of money on headshots and photos. You can do it yourself if
you know the basics of photography with a good 35mm camera or any of the new
digital cameras. Lighting is important here. Take them to the park on a nice
sunny day and shoot the photos. Look at some of the actor shots on the
Internet to get an idea of what they are looking for.
If you do not feel comfortable shooting their photos yourself, hire a
profesional photographer. Look in the phone book. Check the rates. Shop
around. Ask to see samples. Then take all your kids in at one time to save
on the setting fees. Most photographers will give you a sizeable discount
when you do nore than one child.

reasonable I have found. Get a minimum order to begin with. You are just
getting started, and you need to test the waters first. You do not need
"glossies" - stars use glossies. Working actors use lithographic prints
(litho prints).
Now that you have your photos, you need to submit you child to the casting
directors/producers; or, if you do not have the time and resources to
self-submit, you need to find an agent.
You should never give anyone money up front to represent you as an actor.
Casting Directors are paid by the producers to find talent. Agents represent
talent to casting directors. Legitimate "agents" do not charge up-front fees
to represent you and find you work as an actor. Do not pay-to-play. No actor
can afford to play that game. If an agency can not cast enough work to keep
their doors open by working on commissions earned from all the talent they
represent, it can never make you the kind of money you should reasonably
expect to earn from your work as an actor.
Union signatory agents take 10 percent of your earnings after the producer
pays you.
Non-union agents usually take more, up to 20 percent (or whatever you agree
upon) but typically cast only non union productions where the pay is
generally lower and the benefits are virtually non existent, but you may
work more because there are more non-union productions around.
Managers can take 30 to 50 percent (or whatever you agree upon) of your
earnings, depending on the deal you sign with them, but they do a lot more
work, and you will only need one after you are a big star.
At this stage of your career, you just need an agent. Union or non-union,
and they should not charge money up front to represent you. See agents

When you self-submit to a producer or casting director, if you are
submitting your child for a specific role, you need a cover letter with a
statement that says what role you are submitting for.
Example: " I am submitting my child for the role of Little Cutie in your
television commercial for Kiddies Ware, Inc." Don't tell them your child's
life story. They don't care.
Include your resume and headshot with the cover letter. Do not fold photos.
You can print the resume on the backside of the photo by running it through
a photocopy machine at Kinko's or any copy shop, or at the very least, write
your addres and phone on the back of the photo. they sometimes become
seperated from the resume. Be sure to include your contact address and
telephone number on the resume if seperate from the photo. Note: when you
find an agent to represent your child, do not include your own address and
phone on the resume, but rather, leave it blank and the agent will insert
their contact info on the resume, or ask the agent if they want their
address printed on the resumes and photos you provide to them

Okay, that covers self-submission. That is where you submit your kids
yourself without an agent. You can do it if you have time, or you can get an
agent.
To find an agent to represent you, send your child's headshot and resume to
the agency.
You must be prepared to provide the agency/agent with all the headshots and
resumes they need. That is your expense and your responsibility to provide
the agent with marketing material for your child.
Send the resume and headshot to the agencies listed below as an "inquiry"
and tell them your are seeking representation for your children and ask them
(inquire) if they are accepting any new talent. You might call first and
request submission guidelines, but do not just drop by their office without
an appointment, they hate that.
Some agencies have more children than they know what to do with, so they do
not need new faces, so don't be discouraged if they say they have all they
need, thanks but no thanks. It is in no way a reflection on your child's
perceived talent or lack of it, it's just that the market is flooded with
children and there is also a lot of nepotism in the business (the agents
cast their own children first, or their nephew Billy Bob or second cousin's
daughter Sally Joe. It happens a lot.). Some agencies specialize in children
and want to look ate every new face.
If they offer to represent your child, there will be a contract involved,
called a, Agency Contract or Representation Agreement, or a contract by some
such title. They are not all titled the same.
There are basically three types of Talent Agency Contracts: exclusive,
non-exclusive, and limited.
Exclusive contracts make the agency the sole, exclusive representative of
the actor. It prohibits others, and that generally includes the contracted
actor also, from representing the actor to casting directors and producers.
Generally, they also prohibit talent from self-submitting to anyone without
prior approval of the agency. This is to avoid conflicts that might arise
when talent submits for a project only to discover they have already been
submitted by their agent and visa versa.
Non-exclusive agency contracts typically allow the actor to seek work
outside the agency and submit himself or herself for acting jobs they find
out about on their own.
Whether you sign an exclusive or non-exclusive representation agreement
depends on what you think will best serve the interests of your children.
Exclusive agreements are typically for established actors who already have a
proven record of accomplishment and usually will include a provision of
minimum earnings. The agency guarantees that talent will earn a certain
amount of money per year. True "exclusive" agreements are rare. These
typically come from the large agencies who represent talent to the major
studios where the studio engages talent under contract for X number of years
or Y many films, etc. Some small agencies try to use the exclusive contract
format to represent talent, but be careful here. You should not be locked
into an exclusive contract with no minimum guarantees of earnings, and no
way out. It might prevent your child from working at all.
Non-exclusive contracts are by far the most common, and for the beginning
actor, probably the best deal for the actor. It allows the actor to seek
work on their own while allowing the agency to submit the actor through
their established channels on a best-efforts basis.
There are also hybrid agreements sometimes called Limited non-exclusive
agency agreements that are a cross between an exclusive and a non-exclusive
agreement. Whether they are called limited exclusive or limited
non-exclusive, or not even titled that way at all, is not really that
important, it is just a title. What is important to know to identify a
limited agency contract is to look for the wording in the contract itself
that expands or restricts the relationship between the agent and talent.
These limited representation agreements might allow you to self-submit for
some roles, say non-union parts, while restricting union jobs to submission
only by the agency. They might also restrict self-submission within a
certain geographic region, like within Lake County (Chicago), or even the
state of New York, California, Illinois, etc, but allow you to submit for
any roles you know about outside the limited geographic region.
As far as having the contract reviewed by an attorney, yes. You should
always seek qualified legal advice before signing any contract that will
effect your livelihood and/or your child's future. Union agents use a
boiler-plate contract approved by SAG, www.sag.com, and you are usually
pretty safe if you sign a contract offered to you from a union "signatory"
agent.
The things I am telling you here are very general and should not be relied
upon as legal advice. Labor law varies from state to state. Although there
is some uniformity among the states regarding child labor law, not all
states are the same. There are also federal laws that apply everywhere in
the US, and your child has certain rights and, as a parent, you have certain
responsibilities that are required of you regardless of what the contract
says. So, ask a lawyer who is a member of the Bar Association

entertainment law. The small fee they will typically charge for reviewing
the contract and rendering an opinion is usually worth every penny.

Casting Director Toni Cusumano develops definitive online course for parents who want to break their children into the entertainment business.
(New York, New York) East Coast independent casting director Toni Cusumano had a problem. Everyday she received emails and phone calls from parents seeking to break their kids into the business of entertainment. The problem was, who had time to answer and consult everyone? Especially when the world of casting moves at a break neck speed. Email and phones are constantly tied up. "If I answered everyone and provided "counsel" no work would ever get done," said Cusumano. "I kept hearing horror stories from parents about different scams they fell victim to and I found this most disturbing. Udemy gave me the opportunity to develop a course to help parents out."
The course is designed for busy parents to take at their own pace. The course is broken down into 8 lectures, which Cusumano will be adding to with input from her class. The video course also contains downloads, such as the proper templates for acting resumes,links to find acting jobs,and much more. Best of all Cusumano plans monthly "live" sessions with her students. "With the power of the internet I can connect with parents in a live group setting to answer questions without any of us leaving our home and offices", stated Cusumano.
