I was wondering what to do about stage directions at auditions. I am a bit
confused. If it says to kiss your partner while reading the line, and you are
at an audition, isn't it best to leave that out and just concentrate on the
lines?

My advice'd be: if possible, ask beforehand if they want you to do the
kiss (or the punch, or whatever). At the very least, that'll show you've
looked over the material and thought about it.

No, you do not need to follow stage directions at an audition. But do
read them for intent.

I recommend "AUDITION" by Michael Shurtleff. It is available at any
bookstore, and is the best book on the topic of what happens and what
should happen during an audition.

Actually, I find stage directions to be a distraction. I do my best to ignore
them, simply because my scene partner may respond differently than what the stage
action says. The question for me is: when doing a scene at an audition, what do I
want? I have a philosophy that my only competition for a role, is the auditors
preconceived notions. . .Whether I get the role is important, butif I have made
them CONSIDER a possible Regina Giddens, or what have you, then my auditon was a
success. You see, I know that if I don't get this one, I might get the next
because they wil remember a risk taker.

Yes, absolutely, Christopher Jahn has the answer.
Forget stage directions. Your may be reading with a professional reader, or
with a reader not near you exactly. Show them you, not you and reader.

Just a quick note to back up Chris's Shurtleff recommendation.

First of all, the stage directions are often only the writer's imaginary
blocking of the scene, not graven in stone.
Do as you would early in
rehearsal if the action is integral: just mark what you can't do in the
current situation.

A little off-thread but interesting. I think what you're saying is that
you have to make a strong decision about the role and then go with it.
The only reading pretty much guaranteed to fail is the bland, cautious
one,

Absolutely the best book on the subject.
